Remember how freeing it felt getting a 128 MB flash thumb drive about 10 years ago? Even up until a couple of years ago, getting a portable external hard drive that could hold 160 GB seemed like a great little personal luxury – you could carry your movies and your music and your data anywhere.

These days, even as these devices become extremely affordable, people do think twice before buying. They know that there’s cloud storage to be had for next to nothing at all.

If they buy their own personal hard drive, they figure, they could drop it or lose it or something. Cloud storage is forever. Why bother with a portable external hard drive, they feel.

The thing is, cloud storage isn’t as great as you might think. If you get a virus on your computer or if you any need to wipe your hard drive, it’s a lot easier to restore everything from a hard drive you have in your drawer than it is to download hundreds of gigabytes.

And anyway, who has the time or the patience to repeatedly stream a movie every time they want watch? In short, a portable external hard drive still makes sense.

Buying a drive, the choice today is between the USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. It would make a lot of sense to buy 3.0, because it doesn’t cost any more.

Of course, most computers don’t have a USB 3.0 port. But no matter, new computers that come out these days mostly have them.

Practically every computer should have 3.0 support withing a year or two. Until then, your superfast hard drive still can work with an old 2.0 port.

Stay away from FireWire though – that’s a standard that is nearly gone now. If you want something that’s even faster than USB 3.0, you should consider Intel’s Thunderbolt – something that’s only shown up on Apple computers so far.

Thunderbolt is pretty expensive. A mere cable for Thunderbolt costs $50. If you can find it. The upside though is that it can transfer data at twice the speed of USB 3.0.

Since Thunderbolt really hasn’t shown up anywhere yet, might not make much sense looking for a Thunderbolt hard drive. You might be able to use it with your newest Apple computers. You probably wouldn’t be able to use it on anyone else’s computer.

eSATA is a great option too, though that’s exclusively designed for hardware connections. Most new laptops feature eSATA these days. They’ll usually double up as a USB port too. If you get one of these hard drives, you’re in luck. They are as fast as USB 3.0.

Do consider springing for a network attached storage drive or a Wi-Fi drive. This is something that you don’t have to actually physically connect to your computer.

Basically, portable drives are dirt cheap. And they are super compact too. There’s quite nothing like owning a capacious 1TB hard drive that’s the size of the palm of your hand.

For most people, the large amount of storage space they get on today’s computers is enough for whatever they can pile onto it.

However, there are some people that need more space. Instead of buying yet another computer, you can buy external hard drives that can store what you need without adding too much to what you have in your home.

These can be downright small, and can even be portable when you do not want to lug your computer when going somewhere. If you need more space, this is the way to go.

Those that store a lot of music on their computers find that they soon run out of space. If you write your own music, you are going to need tons of extra space.

You can buy almost as must memory as you already have on your computer for around a hundred dollars, give or take.

This means that you can have double the space for far less than you would if you were to buy a more powerful computer or if you had to buy a second one just for your music needs. Music tracks take up a lot of space so give yourself a break and get what you need.

If you take a lot of photographs or have a photography business, external hard drives are going to be great for you too. You can put any projects you have finished on this and keep them there.

Once it is full you can store it safely and then get a new one to start filling it again. Most photographers keep large versions of their pictures and they have a lot of them. The extra space you find on the hard drive that hooks up to your computer externally is going to be a great way to file things away without overwhelming your desktop or your laptop.

Gamers also benefit from having external hard drives. You can keep a few games on your computer at a time, but you may find it hard to keep things moving. Your computer is going to slow down and your game play is going to be ruined as a result.

Instead of storing all of these games on your main hard drive, you can put your games on your external drive and then you can keep your computer fast. You can store many more games this way and you won’t have to delete something you love to make room for something new.

To find out more about external hard drives, have a look around online or go to your local computer and technology store to see what is out there. Some are connected to the computer simply and some are not so easy to use.

Some are more portable than others, and there are obviously differences in the amounts of memory each is going to offer.

You can easily find something that will fit your needs and that won’t cost you an arm and a leg to buy.

You already spent that must on your computer, now it is time to save a little cash.

Today’s computers are sleeker, smaller, and more portable than ever before. Some people use a smart phone for all of their computing needs, but those people don’t have a lot of use for many programs.

Everyone else either uses a hand held table, a laptop, a notepad, or a full sized PC or Mac at home. Whatever the case, each of these things has some type of hard drive, which is where all of your important information will be stored.

If you are smart, you will get something with a removable hard drive or you could end up losing more than just a machine.

If you have ever had a computer crash on you, you can start to understand why a removable hard drive might be a good idea.

Some of them are not, which means a fried computer will take your important files down with it, and unless you have backed that information up, you have lost it forever.

Everyone has the best of intentions when it comes to backing up computer files, but even the most ardent savers forget once in a while.

That is, of course, when the inevitable melt down is about to occur. If you can get the hard drive out of there, you can avoid this headache.

Short of throwing your computer off of a cliff and having the hard drive break into hundreds unidentifiable pieces, most hard drives can survive when a computer goes nuts.

A removable hard drive won’t help you much if you have a virus on your computer that cleaned it off, but it can help when a malfunction in the computer renders it useless.

A professional can always try to get your information off of your hard drive, but it can be very expensive and they may not be able to save anything.

On the other hand, if you have a removable hard drive, you can either put it into a new machine, or you can get an adapter that you put around the hard drive and it then allows you to plug it into another computer so that you can retrieve the files that you need to save. If something has corrupted the files, like the virus mentioned above, it won’t help much, but on the other hand, things have been saved with removable hard drives that were considered permanently lost in the past.

Remember that if you have a removable hard drive, you have to take care of it when it is not in your computer or device.

If you get a hard drive too close to a magnetic field of any type, you will probably find out that all of your information has been wiped clean.

You must do all that you can to keep it dry, clean, and safe from damage. Try to keep in in a safe spot, like your computer, if you can, and also see if you can find a case that may help you protect it from the every day accidents that can wipe out the files that you probably can not afford to lose.

Even a fairly easy project runs better using a little progress planning, though. You can make the set up go swiftly and smoothly by setting up your work area before hand. You’ll need one or more hard shots off the tee.

The drives should adapt to either satas specifications. SATA is an extremely common form of hard drive, so it need to be easy to discover and obtain one, often locally or online. A new screwdriver, if at all possible a Phillips #1, although from a pinch, a #2 will likely work. Your clean workshop. You will be working with quite a few small screws; don’t danger losing any advisors in any mish-mash of clutter.

Excellent lighting along with comfortable obtain make nearly every task visit more smoothly. If you happen to be like a lot of Mac Master owners, your Macintosh Pro might be under some sort of desk as well as table. The initial step is go the Apple Pro to some clean dining room table or desk within a well-lit region.
Discharge Static Energy

1. When the Mac Pro is working, shut the idea down in advance of proceeding.
2. Disconnect any kind of cables that happen to be connected to the Mac Pro, except the facility cord. The facility cord have to be connected, to aid you to discharge almost any static buildup from the power string and in its grounded electric outlet.
3. Discharge every static electricity that has built up on your system by touching the PCI extension slot protect plates. There are these sheet metal plates on the back from the Mac Pro, next to the DVI video clip connectors to the display. You will feel your slight static shock if you touch the actual metal include plates. That is normal; there’s for many who be concerned on your own or the actual Mac Expert.
4. Remove the facility cord from the Mac Pro.

to be continued…

Anytime your hard drive crashes or you lose your data, you’ll need to turn to data recovery to properly restore your information. Data recovery is something most computer users are familiar with, as a majority of us have had to turn to data recovery at some point in time. Even though hard drives are becoming better and better, they are still mechanical and will always encounter problems.

The first thing to do, before any problems happen, is to always back up your data. If you create backups of your information, you’ll be well prepared in the event of a disaster. This way, even if your hard drive cannot be repaired and the data is lost forever, you’ll have the back ups to continue going as normal. If you didn’t make back ups, you’ll find the situation very traumatic when you discover that your data cannot be recovered.

Most hard drives will last for years before they start to encounter any type of malfunction or hardware problems. You can help prevent data loss by turning off your computer when it isn’t in use, or shutting it down when you hear the hard drive making an odd noise. If the hard drive starts to malfunction, letting it continue to run will only do more damage. If you shut it off immediately and take it to a specialist, you’ll have a much better chance of getting it repaired.

With natural disasters, hackers, viruses, or other problems, you won’t have the time to react. Before you know it, your hard drive will be damaged and your data will be gone. Although this can be very frustrating, data recovery can normally bring your information back. All you need to do is take the hard drive to a local specialist, then let them work their magic and show you the power of data recovery.

There are software programs out there that claim to recover lost data, although you should avoid them at all costs. Most of time, these software programs will do your hard drive more bad than good. Even though software may cost a lot less than professional data recovery services, the professional services will guarantee their work. If you turn to software and it only makes things worse – your more or less out of luck, as the software doesn’t guarantee anything.

Anytime your hard drive fails and you seem to have lost your data, you should turn to professional data recovery services immediately. They may cost you a lot of money, although they do the job right the first time. When it comes to your data, you really don’t want to take any chances – especially if you had important documents and files stored on your hard drive.

I have recently purchased it and I am quite pleased with its performance.

For one thing, I like its size, its palm-sized and easy to take anywhere with you, and it is very stylish and durable too.

I would say it combines the best features of all hard drives. It comes along with the FireWire cable and a USB cable.

The USB cable can be used to obtain additional power as it is Y shaped. And due to the FireWire cable no external power supply is required.

The Verbatim offers quite a large space for storage, 320 GB is a huge space and you can easily use it to store your work information so that you don’t have to carry your laptop home.

However, there are a couple of things you will notice about it that might surprise you.

Firstly, the case looks like a metal case in the picture but when I bought it, it was actually a plastic silver case.

Secondly, the bottom of the drive heats up after one uses it for a few hours.

I would advise anyone using this drive that one should not use it for a long length of time. Otherwise it is perfect value for money.

Computers have different types of storage devices. The non volatile storage devices used in computers are called hard drives.

In hard drives, data are stored on magnetic surfaces in the form of platters. Data is stored in digitally encoded format in hard drives.

Hard drives were introduced for use with general purpose computers. later they were expanded to facilitate much more uses like video recorders, PDAs, video game consoles etc. tolerance of hard drives are high as compared to the normal floppy disk drives.

As a result, hard drives can store more amounts of data as compared to the removable storage media. They have a faster access and transmission as well.

RAM is another category of computer storage. This is the abbreviation for random access storage and as the name indicates, it allows a random access without the need for accessing in an order.

RAM in modern computers is in the form of integrated circuits and hence data can be retrieved from any location in a constant time.

In such an access mode, the physical location of the data or the relation of data to its previous pieces becomes irrelevant. This differentiates it from the storage mechanisms used in hard drives and optical discs.

The movements in such devices take more time than data transfer and hence the time taken to return data will depend on the physical location of data.

RAM is associated with a volatile form of memory. As soon as the power is switched off, this memory contents will be lost.

There are different forms of RAM such as SRAM, DRAM, etc. swapping is performed in computers when RAM becomes low due to intensive applications.

In such cases, computers use hard drive space as an additional memory. A constant relying on RAM is not advised as this is unreliable.

For several different reasons, storage is a very important part of a computer. These days, computers do far more than they ever have in the past.

From businesses to family photo’s, storage is the ideal way to keep documents on your computer. The most popular method of storage is the hard disk drive, which we all count on for keeping our data safe.

Even though the hard drive stores data, it isn’t perfect by any means. Hard drive failure is very common with all computers, with no real way to prevent it.

Although there are several different reasons why a hard drive can fail, the most common is overheating. Viruses and crashes are common as well, along with theft and accidental deletion.

With the older style and mechanics of hard drives, the RPM speed was low, meaning that the drives wouldn’t overheat. The hard drives we use now days, have speeds between 7,200 and 10,000 RPM, meaning that they can get quite hot when they start working.

Computers of this day and age come with fans to cool everything down, with most hard drives including temperature sensors as well, so you can keep track of just how hot your hard drive becomes.

With hard drives today, overheating is a very common problem. The faster hard drives come with speeds of 10,000 RPM, which can make the temperature soar above 70 degrees F, really heating things up inside the drive.

The mechanics on the inside are built to withstand the heat, although if things become too hot, you’ll encounter problems. If a drive becomes too hot and ends up losing the data, it may be next to impossible to retrieve the information – no matter how good your data recovery specialists may be.

One area that suffers from the drive overheating is the platters, which are magnetic media. Platters are what carry the data throughout the hard drive. Platters are constructed from optical glass, aluminum, or ceramic and normally coated with a layer of magnetic material.

Once the hard drive begins to heat up, the platters will start to expand, which changes their size. When this happens, the magnetic surface on the platters will get destroyed, which results in a loss of data. If the physical area of the platters are damaged, it will result in unreadable sectors.

Other areas of the hard drive that can be damaged due to overheating are the read and write heads, head actuator, and the controller chip. Hard drives are very sophisticated pieces of hardware, and can’t handle overheating.

The read and write heads are a common example, as they can easily render the drive useless if they become damaged. If they get too hot, they don’t make any contact with media, which pretty much stops the flow of transfer from information to the computer.

To prevent your hard drive from overheating, you should always make sure that it is cooled properly and well ventilated. You can always get additional fans and coolers, which will improve both ventilation and the flow of air in your computer.

You can buy fans and coolers at very affordable prices, which makes them an ideal investment for keeping your hard drive or hard drives cool.

You can also get software that monitors the temperature of your hard drive as well. Whether it’s software, or additional fans, you should always ensure that your hard drives are kept cool.

By keeping them cool, you’ll greatly reduce the amount of crashes. You’ll also increase the stability of your hard drive as well, which will make your entire computer perform much better.
