Computer networking is a process of sharing the data and resources between the linked computers. The Shared resources comprises of the printer, Hard disk, Fax modem, Database, CD - DVD ROM, and data files.

The Computer network can also be divided into the local area network, the networking in building office, medium sized networks, network between two or more offices in a city & broad network, network between the PCs, one is nearby and other can be millions of miles away in some other country over the world.

A network appliance recognized as “Router” helps in WAN connectivity. Internet is world’s biggest WAN network, where thousands of computers from all across the world are linked with each other.

Computer Networking is a practice of connecting two or more PCs or devices with one another. Connectivity can be wired and wireless.

The network of computer can also be categorized in several ways that will depend on the geographical region as stated above. The Computer networks of two main types client-server and peer-to-peer.

In client server computing, computer plays a crucial role, which is identified as server, where files, data are stored in form of web pages, documents or else spreadsheet files, where database, video, & resources are located.

All the other PCs in the client or server network are named as clients, and they attain data from server. In peer-to-peer network all computers play similar role and no PC acts as the centralized server. In major home businesses all around the world the client-server model is in main use.

A computer network topology defines structure, design and outline of a network. Few different topologies such as ring, star, bus, hybrid, mesh, etc.

Among these topologies, star topology is frequently used network topology. In star topology, all PCs in the network are linked with the centralized device like hub or switch.

Therefore, forms a star shape structure. If hubs or switch do not work for any particular reason then all connectivity and link between all the computers of that network will be stopped.

The networks use a special communication language also this language is identified as protocols. Most frequently used and accepted protocols on the Internet and in home as well as other networks are described as TCP/IP.

This is not a single protocol however a suite of numerous protocols. Network can be wired or wireless and this TCP/IP protocol may work in both types of network.
