Your computer is a machine with many different parts. There are the physical parts, such as the hard drive, the mouse and monitor, and there are the software items, including the operating system and the programs that run on it.
There are many different hard drives, and many different mice and other parts available in differing designs and from different manufacturers.
This gives the user a choice, both of the type of item they want and also the price that they are willing to pay for it. The problem is that they are not standard-each manufacture may make them differently.
These differences could be said to make the devices speak different languages to each other. A Microsoft mouse would speak a very different language to a Logitech mouse for instance.
How then, can the operating system speak to all of these different devices, in all of their various languages in order to make them work?
Obviously it would be inefficient to make a different operating system for each manufacturer, and if that were to happen it would still leave the problem of locking users into just one manufacturer for their entire hardware set. This is where device drivers come in. Read the rest of this entry →

If you have ever spent any time poking around on your hard drive you will have seen that there are many different types of files on there.
In some cases your file extension (the bit that tells you what type of file it is) will be hidden and you will just see the different icons.
Either way you may be wondering what all the different file types are for, and why there can’t be just a single, universal file type for each kind of thing.
There are various different kinds of files that you will find on your PC, including office documents, media files and executables that install programs onto your computer.
The differences here are clear and well needed-the different file types tell the computer how to handle a particular file. Clearly, a video could not be opened with a word processor program, and an office document could not be opened with a media player.
Yet within the broader groupings of file types, there are still a great number of differences. Media files for instance come in different varieties. There are photos, videos, music files, and within each of these there may be different formats. Read the rest of this entry →

There are families that for many reasons do not have a computer at home, or may have an older computer that is not able to access the internet.
They may feel that it does not matter, and that it does not negatively impact their lives, but if there are children in the family then the truth may be somewhat different.
The problem is quite simply that education institutions are coming to increasingly rely upon computers in order to get school work done. This may be as little as requiring that it is typed up for submission, or may be set assignments on particular software.
For instance the child may be required to use a word processing program in order to fix a section of text, or may have to make a spread sheet.
A great deal of research for school is also done via computer today, thanks to the internet. Research can take time-and between the research time and time taken to write up a document, this can often be too much time to do it in a library. Because of this, grades can suffer when there is no computer at home.
There is another problem-that of familiarity with computers. A child who is exposed to computers from an early age will find them easy to use. They will not be afraid of them, or nervous about breaking them.
Instead they will be willing to play around with a computer until they manage to get done what they need, and will be familiar enough that they should be able to find what programs and functions they need. Read the rest of this entry →

Voice recognition software is a specialist suit of software that is designed to take the things that a person says over a microphone, and turns it into text or instructions for the computer.
The instructions may be used in various ways, including searching your computer or starting one of the various programs that are on your computer.
There are many different voice recognition software suites available and they vary both in their price tag and their accuracy. As a rule, the cheaper software tends to be harder to set up and train and not as accurate as their more expensive counterparts, but with a little extra effort then these too can be trained to be usable dictation solutions. The features available on the various programs will also vary. Read the rest of this entry →

A wireless system requires you to have a wireless card that does the job of receiving and transmitting data. This is either on your computer or laptop.
Most laptops, as I said earlier, come with the card installed on it. All that you have to do: go to your operating system and enable the card. You can start using it immediately.
Well, this might not be the case with all machines or laptops. Please note that there are also laptops that fitted with Bluetooth and not with WiFi. In these laptops and machines, you need to install the wireless card to get it connected to the access point. Read the rest of this entry →

Many people have computers and were using Microsoft Works or WordPerfect until Microsoft came out with an even better program for business and personal needs.
You will find that Microsoft Office computer software is generated more towards business or classroom needs than for your personal needs depending on what you are going to use the program for. Microsoft Office computer software is comprised of four elements: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
The Word portion of the computer software is the easiest for individuals to learn. It is just a blank document that will help you type up business letters, school papers, newsletters, and any manner of items you may need to have typed rather than hand written. Read the rest of this entry →
