There are now a lot of people who work from home. They may either work from home all of the time, as a small business owner. Or they may telecommute for another company, either part time or full time.
For people who spend at least some of their time working from home, what are the essential technological items that they should own?
Almost any home office will tend to have the same central hub-the personal computer. It isn’t necessary to have the best, and fastest computer available, but you do need one that is reliable and that won’t repeatedly crash, as this will hurt your productivity. A good monitor can reduce eye strain and make it easier to work for longer periods of time.
An internet connection is likely to be the second most important thing for you. A reliable, high speed connection will enable you to contact clients, send and receive emails regarding ongoing or upcoming work, and send finished work on to the clients who are awaiting it.
A dedicated phone line for your business will be needed if you make and receive a lot of calls. This will help to prevent you getting personal calls on the line during business hours, and can mean that you focus on only the one phone when working, ignoring the other. Read the rest of this entry →

There was a time when, in order to gain a degree in your chosen field, you had to give up several years of your life. You could hold down a part time job, if it fitted around your classes, but otherwise you had to make your classes the priority.
Thanks to the increase in technology, online education is changing accessibility, and increasing the ease with which you can get your degree.
Early on, as use of the internet became more popular, universities started offering supplementary materials online. Many lecturers chose to start releasing some notes or other items, but generally these were to be used only in addition to taking classes, rather than replacing them.
You still needed to attend full time, but could back up your education when you got home, with further study.
The niche for home study soon grew, and universities were quick to capitalize upon it. They saw the need for an easier way to gain a degree, and were eager to tap into this new market. Read the rest of this entry →

A wireless system requires you to have a wireless card that does the job of receiving and transmitting data. This is either on your computer or laptop.
Most laptops, as I said earlier, come with the card installed on it. All that you have to do: go to your operating system and enable the card. You can start using it immediately.
Well, this might not be the case with all machines or laptops. Please note that there are also laptops that fitted with Bluetooth and not with WiFi. In these laptops and machines, you need to install the wireless card to get it connected to the access point. Read the rest of this entry →

Our access to information has never been as convenient. In ancient times, only young men were allowed to go to school and learn about philosophers and literature.
When the ultra-conservative Middle Ages came along, knowledge was left in the hands of the religious, and wouldn’t see a renewal until the Renaissance.
As the centuries passed, people were granted greater access to information, until our modern day scholars decided to make things easier for everyone.
From libraries stocking books in order, we moved to databases that stored information in a way that it could be stored, searched through, and retrieved. Read the rest of this entry →

When someone refers to a laptop or a notebook, they are talking about a portable computer. The term laptop came about because the computer itself is small enough to fit on ‘top’ of your ‘lap’.
Pretty simple really. It is amazing how technology has evolved from needing a whole entire room to house a computer machine — to being able to have high speed internet and 200 GIGABYTES of information right in your lap!
Laptop computers really became popular around 1983 with the first ever portable computer, the Compaq Portable. They were not called laptop computers quite yet at that time, they were called “luggables.” Read the rest of this entry →
