No Computer? What Does it Matter?
There are families that for many reasons do not have a computer at home, or may have an older computer that is not able to access the internet.
They may feel that it does not matter, and that it does not negatively impact their lives, but if there are children in the family then the truth may be somewhat different.
The problem is quite simply that education institutions are coming to increasingly rely upon computers in order to get school work done. This may be as little as requiring that it is typed up for submission, or may be set assignments on particular software.
For instance the child may be required to use a word processing program in order to fix a section of text, or may have to make a spread sheet.
A great deal of research for school is also done via computer today, thanks to the internet. Research can take time-and between the research time and time taken to write up a document, this can often be too much time to do it in a library. Because of this, grades can suffer when there is no computer at home.
There is another problem-that of familiarity with computers. A child who is exposed to computers from an early age will find them easy to use. They will not be afraid of them, or nervous about breaking them.
Instead they will be willing to play around with a computer until they manage to get done what they need, and will be familiar enough that they should be able to find what programs and functions they need. Read the rest of this entry →
