Something called Steam hit the news recently, when it was released on the Apple Mac platform. Even more recently, Steam has been well talked about in online communities because of the incredible sales that it had. Just what is Steam and why has it been big news?
Steam is a software deployment platform with many functions. It is a gaming community that allows users that own the same games as their friends to join up in multi-player games online, or to play games against whoever else is online at the time, looking to play the same game as you.
Steam offers the chance to buy games easily via it’s digital store. Users can legally buy and download games to play on their PC, saving on a trip to the store, often massive queues and waiting times for the biggest name releases, or saving on shipping costs for games delivered to your home. When it comes to using your mobile cell phone out and about there can be a few problems. One of those is the fact that actually using it out and about exposes it to the elements-to both the wind and the rain, which can negatively affect your phone’s call quality, and may actually lead to long term damage to your phone.
Now a company has come up with a solution to adverse weather-a raincoat for your cell phone. What they are selling is a small, thin plastic bag that you place your phone in.
The bag uses a sticky strip to adjust the size, keeping it relatively tightly wrapped around your phone, and a zip to allow you to take your phone out and put it back in again. The bags are supposed to be disposable when they have been used and become crinkled or damaged.
They help by keeping your phone dry, stopping the wind from blowing across the microphone, and also keeping dust and other debris out of your phone. They do so without stopping you from pressing the keys on your phone, and without making your touch screen less responsive.
Why can’t you just use a normal cell phone case? For a start they tend to be significantly more expensive, and occasionally they can interfere with the easy use of the phone. But the bigger problem tends to be a lack of appropriate protection.
Simply put, the average cell phone case is not water proof. They rarely cover the key pad, or the screen in its entirety, because they would interfere with key presses (or the interaction with the touch screen).
Instead, touch screen phones normally use a screen protector, which offers protection from scratches and chips, but is not waterproof. It does not wrap around the phone nor join onto a case at the back and therefore leaves large gaps through which water can enter. Read the rest of this entry →
