It’s forever been a kind of lesson in economics how the manufacturers price a computer printer so that they lose 30% on the sale, but make up for it by selling replacement cartridges at a 1000% markup. Printer ink prices weren’t always this expensive.

Ink prices, over the last 10 years have gone up by about four times. You could easily buy a computer printer for $30 today and the very next month, spend about $70 on buying replacement cartridges.

If you are asking yourself why printer ink has to be this expensive, it’s a rather obvious question. HP for instance, has a $30 billion imaging business; they find that the printer business gives them three times as much in profits as their computer business. And most of those profits come from price gouging with inks.

Not every computer printer manufacturer is trying the same tack to stay in business though. Kodak, a company that’s been trying hard to find a footing ever since its photographic film business evaporated, has been wondering if it can turn the printer business model that every other manufacturer has been following on its head, and ingratiate itself to the consumer.

They have been trying to price their printers to be somewhat expensive and to price their inks to be quite cheap. With their line of photo printers, they are pricing their cartridges at about a quarter of what the other makers do.

While Kodak photo printers put out pictures that are considered to be the best in the industry, their ink prices are among the lowest. In the (admittedly small) photo printer market, they’ve made quite a dent.

HP’s way of dealing with this has been to try to bribe all the major retailers into dropping any cheaper alternatives. Staples for instance, has for long had its own line of printer ink cartridges that could save you about $10.

Yet at any Staples store today, and you only get HP’s own consumables. HP has bribed Staples into dropping all third-party consumables.

But Kodak’s new system of making a profit on the computer printer sale and leaving the ink alone has kind of made a large-scale impact on the rest of the market.

HP, Canon and Lexmark have begun to sell super-cheap printers. For instance, you can buy a Lexmark printer for $40 now. It’s almost like a new printer with starter-cartridges installed is cheaper than a new cartridge now.

Still, consumers do continue to just buy printers based on what kind of features the machines have and not based on the price they will have to pay for ink. Manufacturers don’t make it any easier on their consumers either.

It can be very difficult to compare one printer with another for how much it will end up costing you in ink purchases. They package inks in different sizes and there is nowhere you can go for easy information on how many pages of print you can get with the ink that goes with any kind of printer.

For the consumer, the good news though is that they just aren’t printing that much anyway. People have easy Internet connectivity everywhere now and they don’t need to print things out as much as they used to.

Still, it’s a shame that Kodak’s policy of being honest with the consumer hasn’t really won it any points. Only the really educated customer notices what Kodak is trying to do.

Used computers are still useful. They can help you save money and with that, you can spend your money wisely on other things.

If you are planning to buy a computer for personal use at home or for your kids, and want to consider buying a used computer, this article is for you.

You might want to consider the ten tips below on buying a used computer.

If you are not a tech-savvy, ask your tech-savvy friends to shop with you. They can help you choose the right specifications for your computing needs.

Search online computer stores that sell used or second hand computers. Make sure to search to at least 3 or 5 stores for price, specifications and warranty comparison. Read the reviews to help you give ideas in choosing and buying wisely.

If you are buying a used computer at a local computer store, make sure to give a thorough physical inspection on the used computer unit. This is to ensure that the computer is not damage and all functions are working. Insist on testing the computer yourself rather than watching the seller to do it for you.

Make sure that the used computer has the original operating system software discs, manuals and driver installer discs. Do not forget to get the discs, manuals or licenses for any software or applications installed on the used computer.

Bargain the price reasonably with the seller. It doesn’t matter how much the seller paid for the computer. Remember that computers depreciate fast so don’t overpay.

Do not buy used printers, scanners or hard disks unless you are sure that they are actually still working. These peripherals have parts that may easily break down or get damaged.

Make sure that the used computer is upgradable like there are expansion slots, extra RAM can be added, or the processor can be upgraded.

Ask if the computer parts have been replaced or repaired. Major computer components that have been replaced add to the machine’s life longevity.

Make sure that the computer’s operating system is compatible with the application or software you have or need to add now or in the future.

Ask if the seller has a transferable warranty or service agreement of the used computer. That would give you peace of mind that the used computer still has warranty that you can avail of.

As we all know, open source software’s source code is available to the general public for modification or use from its original design or structure free of charge.

One of the famous open source softwares is Linux operating systems. But open source is not just about access to the source code. It has free distribution and it does not restrict other software.

Have you ever wonder why you should use open source software?

This article sites the top reasons why you should use open source software.

First, open source programs are RELIABLE.

Open source software’s source code availability to the public makes the program reliable.

Whenever there is a bug detected, developers or users tried to fix those bugs within a couple of hours, report it to the maintainers of the software and release an updated version.

Users may opt to choose to use the fixed version or the official version (including the fix releases).

Second, open source software offers STABILITY to business.

Closed source software usually requires businesses to upgrade to the new versions of the software to support certain features needed.

This means cost for the business. Using an open source software, businesses or users can have access to the source code.

That will allow the business to support itself to the old version where necessary and gives more options to the businesses or users.

Lastly, since the source code is available for free, businesses, users or organizations are not limited to acquiring SUPPORT from the program authors or developers.

Malware is used to refer viruses, Trojans and worms or any programs that have malicious actions.

Worm, a type of malware, propagates through the network. This means that worms can propagate via file sharing, instant messaging, downloading applications from unknown sources and visiting malicious web sites.

An example of network-infecting worm is Slammer that spread around the world in less than 15 minutes! Internet traffic caused by Slammer in its search for computers to infect caused slowdown of the Internet and affected telecommunications and some financial networks.

Trojans and viruses, also types of malware, are not capable of propagating through the network but they can modify and infect files. They can possibly cause data loss.

Data is very important on businesses and contributes to a business’ profit growth. If these malware infectors can cause data loss, they can also be a factor to profit loss.

Today’s malware comes as a bundled package: worms now often include Trojan functions or able to infect executable (.exe) files on the victim machine.

They are no longer worms, but blended threats. Blended threats use multiple infection mechanisms and multiple methods of causing damage.

Malware can cause problems on businesses like data and profit loss and damaged computer systems.

Businesses especially the enterprise and medium segments are usually spending money to have a great implementation of security to their networks.

Usually, they are deploying desktop antivirus software to every client machines, mail and gateway security systems, and strong firewalls.

Some small and medium businesses are having outsourced antivirus protection. This means that some of them are buying outsourced services like server monitoring, hosted mail security systems and sometimes, bundled software that can make system administration easier.

Small business like a computer café is very prone to malware attacks. This is because most computer cafés are not implementing security policies to every client machines.

If they implement a security policy like blocking porn web sites, then sales will possibly decrease. Basically, computer cafes are usually experiencing different malware attacks that can affect the business.

The least that this kind of business can do is to have a strong and effective maintenance of the computers.

Businesses may have strong security policies and protection, but most malware infections still start on every client machine.

This is possibly because most computer users are doing network-related activities like browsing malicious web sites, downloading and executing applications from unknown sources, instant messaging, sending and receiving spam emails with malicious attachments and file sharing.

Malware threats can have a big chance of attacking client machines if users are not safely using their computers.

Some of the common malware problems on businesses are:

Corrupted data cause by file infectors

Infected computer systems

Network bandwidth consumption because of network worms’ propagation

Employee low productivity because of having an infected workstation

Malicious attachments from emails that can cause infections to mail servers

Profit loss caused by damaged computer systems or corrupted data

These common problems can be easily addressed if users are using their computers safely.

To protect your businesses you may consider the following suggestions in order to prevent further malware problems:

Educate users or employees with regards to malware infections. This can be done through small meetings, seminar, and sharing and monthly email notifications about malware.

Implement security policies to network shares like allowing “Read Only” access to shared files, disabling the Autoplay feature of the Windows to all client machines, and strong password policy.

Make sure to apply all operating system patches.

Have weekly computer maintenance in order to check if there are client machines that need to be addressed immediately.

Scan removable drives first before executing the files stored on them.

These suggestions may be simple but can greatly help in order to prevent further malware problems on business.

Computers have different types of storage devices. The non volatile storage devices used in computers are called hard drives.

In hard drives, data are stored on magnetic surfaces in the form of platters. Data is stored in digitally encoded format in hard drives.

Hard drives were introduced for use with general purpose computers. later they were expanded to facilitate much more uses like video recorders, PDAs, video game consoles etc. tolerance of hard drives are high as compared to the normal floppy disk drives.

As a result, hard drives can store more amounts of data as compared to the removable storage media. They have a faster access and transmission as well.

RAM is another category of computer storage. This is the abbreviation for random access storage and as the name indicates, it allows a random access without the need for accessing in an order.

RAM in modern computers is in the form of integrated circuits and hence data can be retrieved from any location in a constant time.

In such an access mode, the physical location of the data or the relation of data to its previous pieces becomes irrelevant. This differentiates it from the storage mechanisms used in hard drives and optical discs.

The movements in such devices take more time than data transfer and hence the time taken to return data will depend on the physical location of data.

RAM is associated with a volatile form of memory. As soon as the power is switched off, this memory contents will be lost.

There are different forms of RAM such as SRAM, DRAM, etc. swapping is performed in computers when RAM becomes low due to intensive applications.

In such cases, computers use hard drive space as an additional memory. A constant relying on RAM is not advised as this is unreliable.

PKWARE, the inventor of the .zip standard, is giving away a non-commercial use license of SecureZIP Express and the opportunity to win great prizes in the new “Decrypt and Drive” contest!

With SecureZIP Express you can compress/decompress and encrypt files that you store or send.

Compressing files is a great way to save storage space, especially on thumb drives and CD’s, and we all have files we should be securing!

The software also includes a digital certificate so you can exchange files securely with others without using passwords. Only the person the file was encrypted for can open it when you use a digital certificate.

The software is fully licensed for non-commercial use and has no toolbars or spyware! For years, PKWARE has given free .zip software away and wants as many users as possible to receive the benefits of SecureZIP.

PKWARE is giving away great prizes including a Honda scooter, bicycles, Wii games, gas cards, and more!

Visit www.DecryptandDrive.com to play the game daily and/or download the free software.

You need to have SecureZIP, and the digital certificate it installs, on the computer you play the game from.

You can also get SecureZIP Express at www.securezip.com

Configuring the LAN is a real pain. You need to manually allocate the network address to every device on network, & keep the record of them in order to ensure that you did not use same one twice – and if you did, devices will stop working.

But modern LANs with the routers using system named DHCP. The DHCP stands for lively host pattern protocol.

It is the fancy way to say that when device connects to a network, it asks router which of the addresses are free, & then router allocates to it for limited period of time.

This permits you to connect & disconnect things from the network when you want, devoid of having to arrange them.

Even though your laptop is not connected to the network prior to, you can only plug it in, & off you go, with no need to know about how this network is been configured.

Overall, to get modern network up & running, all you need to do is connecting each computer to router using Ethernet cable.

This will be sufficient to get computers to observe each other, however occasionally you require some additional configuration.

In Windows, easiest means to configure the network is to My Network Places on desktop or Start menu, and after that click ‘Set up home or else small office system’.

When you have done that, any of the printers or else other devices, which are linked to any computers, or to router itself, can be mechanically shared.

If you would like to share person folders between the computers, that are also easy to do – only right click in My Computer, opt Properties then Sharing tab, and after that put tick in ‘Share this file on network’ box.

You can connect you LAN very easily to your computer just see that connection is proper.

When the discussion comes to securing your computer from viruses and malware, the obvious choice that comes to our mind is surely using any “anti-virus” and keeping it up-to-date.

However if you consider your options and weigh them, then no wonder you would realize that there are other stuff that you can really do…

These are rather more effective than just installing an effective up-to-date anti-virus, so let’s see all the options one by one…

Anti-Virus

Firstly when you say the word Anti-virus, it is basically a software designed to protect your computer against known viruses, but with one or the other new virus emerging on a daily basis, anti-virus programs need regular updates.

You can pick any Anti-virus of your choice amongst the various options available such as Norton Symantec 360, Avira, Kaspersky, AVG, MacAfee etc., and then regularly check with the official website of your anti-virus software company to see some sample descriptions of viruses and to get regular updates for your software.

You can also read more reviews of anti-viruses, to make the best choice according to your needs. Remember that some of them are premium and would cost you a bit (not too much) but even there are many efficient freeware like AVG, which can get the job done totally free of cost!

Beware of unknown attachments!

Every now and then you would receive spam mails and often they will be accompanied by attachments, which might contain malicious attacks, so better beware of them.

If you receive mails like – Congratulations You have Won!!!? – XXXX NATIONAL LOTTERY HEADQUARTERS… then be cent percent sure that you are never gonna’ make a penny outta’ it.

But if you open it and let your system be attacked by some harmful malicious attack hidden inside it, then sure thing you would end up spending few bucks in getting your system fixed!

So never open emails or attachments from unknown sources, and always be suspicious of any unexpected email attachments even if they appear to be from someone you know (but not pretty well).

So whenever you receive a suspicious email (like that lottery one), the best thing to do is to delete the entire message, including all the attachments.

Use firewalls

Firewalls create a protective wall between your computer and the outside world, and come in primarily two forms; software firewalls that run on your personal computer and hardware firewalls that protect a number of computers at the same time.

They not only help in protecting your computer from malicious attacks, but also ensure that Internet intruders (unauthorized persons) can not gain access to your computer while you are using the Internet.

Tip: Regularly download security updates and “patches” for operating systems and other software. Most major software companies today release updates and patches to close newly discovered vulnerabilities in their software.

Avoid sharing your Computer

It’s best not to share access to your computers with lesser known persons or strangers. Try to learn about file sharing risks as there are too many complications.

Just take of the fact that your computer operating system may allow other computers on a network, including the Internet, to access the hard-drive of your computer in order to share files.

So this ability to share files can be used to infect your computer or look at the files on your computer.

Remedy: Check your operating system and your other program help files to learn how to disable file sharing.

Why call for extra trouble when you are not using internet?

Logically speaking it’s quite simple… but just try asking yourself whether you really do it? In fact many a times, even I don’t disconnect my computer from the Internet when not in use.

However that is one of the best ways of avoiding extra trouble because disconnecting your system from the Internet when you are not online reduces the probability of someone accessing your computer.

Above all, if you haven’t kept your anti-virus software up-to-date, or don’t have a firewall in place, someone could infect your computer or use it to harm someone else on the Internet.

Stay Secure!

You should check your security on a regular basis, so evaluate your computer security at least twice on a yearly basis.

Probably a good idea would be to do it when you change the clocks for daylight savings!

Moreover additionally make sure you have the security level appropriate for you and also that your family members and others (like employees etc) know what to do if your computer becomes infected.

Furthermore, people should always know how to update virus protection software, how to download security patches from software vendors, and how to create a proper password.

Try to even back-up your computer data on CDs or DVDs regularly and if you have access to a network, save copies of your data on another computer in the network as well.

These are some of the ways of securing you PC from viruses and getting prepared to encounter any uninvited trouble!

You may encounter many different types of strange error messages while working on your Windows computer. These errors may not only prevent you from working on your PC, but may also cause unnecessary frustrations.

Listed below are a few easy tips to help you troubleshoot strange error messages and resolve them.

When an error message is displayed, ensure that:

Your system meets the requirement to perform a particular task

Many computer errors occur if your system does not have the required software, hardware, or driver to open a particular file.

For example, if you try to play an XviD movie on your computer and you do not have XviD codec installed on the PC, the missing xvidcore.dll error may be generated. In this case, to resolve the error, you will have to obtain and install the XviD codec and then attempt to play your media file again.

Program and DLL files required to run a software are not corrupt, damaged, or missing

Rundll and other program errors, like the one given below, may occur if a required DLL or program file are missing from the system or are corrupt:

rundll32.exe – Unable To Locate Component

This application has failed to start because framedyn.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

The first thing you can do to resolve such error messages is to try to replace the file that is reported as corrupt or missing. If the file belongs to a software application, the best thing to do will be to reinstall the application or update it.

It is recommended that you first uninstall the faulty application, using the Add or Remove Programs utility or a reliable third-party program uninstaller and then perform the reinstallation.

If a system file is corrupt, you may perform the following tasks to replace the missing file:

Use Recovery Console to extract and copy the faulty file from the Windows XP installation CD.

Perform System Restore to revert your system to the time when there was no error.

Reinstall the operating system—use this method as the last resort.

Your system is free of Malware infections

If error messages start appearing all of a sudden, it may be an indication of some kind of malware infection. Malware programs, such as virus, Trojans, and spyware may infiltrate your PC through infected email attachments, freeware and shareware software, open network shares, and infected external media that you may connect to your PC.

To prevent these malicious infections, you need to install and configure essential security tools, such as firewall, antivirus and antispyware on your Windows PC. You must regularly perform full system scans using the antivirus and antispyware tools to detect and remove any malicious information.

Windows registry is free of unwanted data and errors

As you work on your PC, a lot of data is added and removed from the registry. Quite often, information that is no longer required stays behind in the registry causing the registry to bloat up to a very large size.

A large, bloated registry becomes unstable and starts generating various computer errors. To prevent and fix registry problems, you need to scan the registry and rectify the detected errors. To do this task, you may use a reliable and easy-to-use third-party registry repair utility.
