There are some parents that worry non-stop about how much time their children spend watching television and playing things like video and computer games. This is a relevant concern, because too much can be bad for children.

Some suggest that children under two have no screen time and then that it be limited from then on. However, you also have to think about the world in which they are going to live when they get older.

Computers are in almost every home and are common in most workplaces. Allowing your children some time to play computer games can actually be a wise investment in their future.

Many children today go into kindergarten knowing the basics of using a mouse and starting and using simple programs on a computer. In fact, they may start doing some work at that age on a computer while they are at school.

Teachers will help children that do not know what to do, but if your children have some limited interactions with computer games on your home PC, they will already know what do and they will already know that learning computer games at school are going to be just as fun as what they would do at home.

What you want to so is to find computer games for kids that have learning potential. Today, there are many of them on the market.

Most of them are made just to help children learn things like the alphabet, counting, colors, basic logic skills, and computer dexterity. Some are just for fun, but they end up having a learning element to them as well.

Some are generic and some are made with characters that your children may know from TV like the Wiggles, Sesame Street, or whatever it is that they love.

Parents should limit the time children are playing computer games, and if at all possible, play along with them. This can be hard when both parents work and time is limited, but if you play with them, you are on top of what they are learning in computer games and you also know when they are ready for something more advanced.

It is also easy to get lost in doing a chore while your child plays and they end up being on the computer longer than you intended. Some play is good, but they should have limits on time playing games and when watching TV.

Remember that as children get older they are going to want to find computer games online. There are plenty of good ones, but it is also easy for them to wander away to sites that you may not like.

See what you can do to put parental controls on your computer and also on popular sites like YouTube and Facebook. You want to know what they see and you want to know that they cannot find things that are well beyond their years.

If they cannot follow rules you set up while playing games, limit or cut out time as punishment. They’ll soon learn to follow your computer games and online activity rules.

There’s a scene in the movie Singin’ in the Rain where when a movie mogul gives a demonstration of the first talking movie to a crowd of high society party attendees, one uppercrust woman sniffs and says, “I think it’s vulgar”.

That’s practically been the kind of reception every entertainment innovation has ever had from the establishment – every new kind of music, sport, television show, comic book; and as far as video games are concerned, the cold reception hasn’t ended.

And while most video games get made for wholesome family entertainment, there are a few titles that come out every year that do walk a thin line.

Crossing some line from time to time is only to the expected in an industry that tries very hard to push the envelope.

But still, videogame haters jump all over them, focusing on these particular games, to try to demonstrate how video games herald the end of civilization. Let’s take a look at the action computer games that get the most negative press.

Let’s start with a title that practically defines the action computer games genre – Grand Theft Auto. One of the biggest videogame franchises in the world, the game seems to encourage young people to glamorize and follow a life of thuggery.

The game is all about stealing cars, beating and killing people and grabbing what could only be hookers, for fun. On the San Andreas version of this game, the designers actually plugged in some actual graphic sexual content for some real street cred. The FTC didn’t like it at all and not only did they fine the publishers, they made them pull the product from shelves.

With some action computer games, it’s like the designers are actually trying to earn the genre a terrible reputation. Consider the Manhunt franchise that first came out about eight years ago.

You know how they say that guns make it easy for people to commit violence? The designers of this game certainly took that opinion to heart.

The violence in this game, you certainly get your hands dirty for. You don’t resort to guns or bombs or cars to inflict violence in this videogame. You pick up a baseball bat and smash a person with blood and gore all over the place.

Sometimes, you strangle them; sometimes you suffocate them with plastic. This game actually comes from the creative makers of Grand Theft Auto.

As unwholesome as the game might be, it certainly has pushed the envelope in action computer games. Now into its second version, the game has sold 2 million copies.

There is a lot that you hear about school bullying in the media today – with unfortunate cases like the Phoebe Prince suicide sending up public disgust for the practice all the time.

One game publisher found that it would be a great way to earn a little street cred to publish a game that glorified school bullying. And Bully was the result.

Of course, critics of action computer games were all over it one more time. There is actually a bit of sexual violence in the bullying shown in the game too.

The courts though deemed it not egregious enough and allowed the title to be sold. When it comes to action computer games, publishers certainly know how to push people’s buttons.

The release of the Xbox Kinect came in a flurry of excitement. Owners of the Xbox 360 were anxious to buy the new controller system, and some people who didn’t have one already went out and bought the games system as well as the controller.

This controller was seen to be so different as to be a revolution in games play, because it actually has no controller, instead using the movements of your body to control the game.

The fact that it only worked with the Xbox 360 was seen as a challenge by some people. A lot of people who didn’t have the Xbox 360, and didn’t want it, were still interested in the new Kinect controller. This led to a challenge being set.

It was started by Adafruit Industries, and called the Open Kinect Project. The best part was that the challenge carried a $1000 prize, an exciting challenge for anyone in the know!

The challenge was met, and very quickly by a man who was working on programming drivers before the challenge was even announced.

Within a matter of hours of the release of Kinect, a basic set of drivers were created that would run the Kinect through a PC running a Linux distro.

This of course angered Microsoft, who made threats of legal action-threats that led to an increase in the reward being offered for an open source driver set that would run Kinect through other devices.

However Microsoft soon dropped their case. It turned out that they didn’t have a legal case against the man who created the drivers and their legal team realized that they could go no further.

The hardware itself was unaltered, and that is an important point, and it hasn’t been reverse engineered to create a clone, or copy of the device.

All that has been done is that a set of software drivers were made that allow Kinect to run on other devices-and there is nothing illegal about that.

Whether it is moral is another matter. The Xbox is an incredibly expensive device, and it was intended that the two be used together.

By hacking the device in this way, potentially sales for Microsoft may be lost, costing them in profit lost because people don’t need to buy the Xbox 360 in order to play games with the Kinect.

Yet, looking at this from another angle, this move could be a real boon for Microsoft. Previously, people who couldn’t afford the Xbox 360, Kinect combo had to simply go without either.

With the new drivers, anyone who owns a PC can run the Kinect-meaning that Microsoft could potentially manage to sell the device to anyone who owns a PC.

More, it shows that it should be possible to use the Kinect controller on many different devices once the drivers that allow it to interface with the device are created.

This opens up a massive potential for Microsoft, not only in selling the Kinect device but also, it seems, in making software for the Kinect that runs on other platforms.

The question is whether Microsoft will choose to do that, or try again to litigate against the people who are making this possible.

If you are someone who loves to play games like Fate, Diablo, Law & Order, Chainz, Luxor, Zuma, Mah Jong, etc. and don’t need anything overly fancy, then you might not be faced with the need of purchasing over-priced gaming machines and any decent configuration should suffice.

However if you are a hard-core gamer, who needs extreme graphics support and high-end configuration then you need to consider many aspects in your gaming PC.

Rendering 3D graphic environments and displaying complex animations requires enormous processor power and memory.

So even though your PC works fine for everyday tasks like e-mail, Web browsing, and playing music, it might not be able to run many of the latest games.

But don’t worry many ways you can tweak your system so it can rise to the challenge.

For all the diehard net users, a very high-end configuration isn’t really worth the money, and mostly the cost of the PC goes up when you try to upgrade your graphics card, RAM and put-in additional things, that make your system a GAMING PC rather than just a PC!

The internet users may go for a PC net book rather than a desktop or a high-end laptop!

The latest Lennovo net-books and acer-aspire one are surely a viable option, but things vary greatly when it comes down to selecting a gaming PC!

So here’s what you need to know about your PC before buying a game:

The CPU type and speed (for example: AMD Athlon, 2.2GHz)

How much RAM (memory) you have

How much hard disk space is available

Version of Windows XP and upgrade level (like Windows XP Home Edition, SP1 etc…)

Graphics card information

Sound card information

The video or graphics card is the most important component of a gaming PC’s. Some systems use dual SLI (NVIDIA) or CrossFire (ATI) cards, and as the graphics card gets older, it struggles to play the latest PC games at the highest screen resolution and graphics-detail settings.

So while setting out to buy a PC for high-end gaming it’s very much essential to buy the one with the latest graphics card configuration, so that you don’t get outdated in the race pretty soon!

But having said that, unless it has enough RAM (about 2-3GB) to be able to run wholly from it, a gaming computer with a fast processor and a good gaming video card that had a slow hard disk drive, working at only about 5200RPM, would be a hell of a joke!

The midrange video cards, such as those that are built around the ATI Radeon 9600 graphics chip, can all play the latest games, but you won’t experience the same level of graphical detail as you would with a state-of-the-art card, such as those that are built around ATI’s Radeon and NVIDIA’s GeForce high-end graphics chips.

For instance, with a Radeon 9600 video card displaying on a 17″ LCD monitor, set to its native resolution of 1280×1024, you would have to turn down the game-detail settings such as the colour depth from 32-bit to 16-bit colour, or possibly switch off the card’s post processing image enhancement capability.

But none of those restrictions would apply if the video card used a Radeon 9800 XT chip.

Dell’s XPS systems are supposed to be good in this regard…

AMD Athlon FX’s are the best gaming CPUs since they are the highest clocked, so try to get the highest one available possibly the FX57, as this category of powerhouse CPU’s have large caches and are multiplier unlocked for preventing over clocking.

You may consider the X2′s if gaming is not the most important thing to you, but still you need a gaming machine!

However running something complex in the background is something you think you’d like to do often & if software MPEG trans-coding is important to you then surely it’s a good choice, not to mention the recent GPUs helping out everyone in the cause.

My design for a perfect gaming machine would be

Athlon 64 X2 4800+

At least 2Gb DDR400 ( possibly from Kingston)

Asus A8N-SLI Premium Motherboard

Asus Extreme N7800 GTX-2DHTV in SLI Mode Graphics Card

Western Digital Raptor 74Gb/10k RPM Primary Disk

Hitachi Deskstar 7K500 500Gb Secondary Disk (never runs out of space)

DVD-R and DVD-ROM Drives from LG

Thermaltake Armour Black Casing with BigWater SE water cooling system

Turbo-Cool® 850 SSI 850W PSU

Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty™ FPS Sound Card

Creative GigaWorks™ S750 Speaker System

Probably LG M1940A 17″ LCD Monitor

Like its cheap and you can play games, for under 500 bucks it’s a dream machine for people who want to play games, but can’t really afford it.
