If you’re a gamer and you’re working off a limited budget (who isn’t?) then you’re almost always better off buying a desktop computer and not a laptop. You get a lot more mileage for your money.

But laptops, more and more, are becoming mainstream and don’t really cost as much more than desktops as they used to.

You really could find a laptop for gaming that was designed with all the right features, that wasn’t that much more expensive than the desktop equivalent. This is what you need to know.

How do you know that a given machine is a gaming laptop? Well, usually, they don’t build them to be as slim and lightweight as regular laptops. These, they built for performance, even if it means a less flattering figure.

Now a laptop for gaming isn’t just a powerful laptop. It needs to have specific features built in that don’t all have to do with performance.

Let’s look at something to do with performance first of all and get out of the way. It goes without saying that a laptop for gaming needs a powerful graphics card built into the system.

Since this is meant to be an evergreen advice article and not just something for today, it’s hard to specify what kind of graphics card it should be.

As of late 2011, one specification you could look for would be a card built-in that had 2GB in graphics memory. That isn’t the only specification you need to look for though. Just look for the best discrete desktop graphics card for gamers they are selling at the moment, and look for something that’s nearly as powerful for your laptop.

A good way to judge how adequate the graphics card on your laptop is, would be to look up the recommended configuration for the games you intend to play. If your laptop has something like that, you’re good to go.

But apart from the performance, you’re looking for things that make gaming actually easy and convenient. For instance, if they call it a laptop for gaming and the keys seem all crammed together, that’s poor design.

Look for well-spaced backlit keys and a tapering keyboard design. You need to be able to hit those keys in a split second.

Of course, you need a good screen that’s at least 15 inches, and Full HD would not be a bad idea either. But you do want screen quality and sound quality that really live up to what the game designers have intended. And intend very well, they do.

They build those games these days to spectacular Hollywood movie levels of budget. The better your screen and sound are, the better you’ll enjoy your game.

Look for audio ports that will allow you to directly plug your laptop into a surround sound system if it’s available.

What is it that really takes entertainment technology forward – VCRs, DVDs, cable, 3D, Internet – what is the kind of consumer demand that really fuels the need for change and leaps forward in technological innovation?

No, it isn’t the soaring human spirit that does it. It’s porn, pure and simple. If it weren’t for powerful demand for accessible porn, none of these entertainment media devices would ever have made it to the mainstream, media experts claim.

As wonderful as all of that might be for spinoff benefits, as a parent, you certainly do experience a degree of anxiety over keeping your child away from porn.

It happens to be more difficult today than ever before now that it’s accessible on Internet connected gaming consoles and any smartphone.

You’ve learned how to block websites like that with child monitoring software on the computer. What do you do with all these new devices that allow access? How to block websites on those?

While completely blocking websites on cell phones and gaming consoles can be extremely tricky, you certainly can easily make a few changes to make sure that your child doesn’t accidentally stumble on something even if he isn’t actually looking for it.

You don’t even need a smartphone to access the Internet – any underachieving feature phone will allow a reasonable amount of Internet access. The problem with phones of course is that they are used outside of the home. It can be very difficult to monitor what goes on on a phone’s Internet browser.

Now certainly, your child isn’t going to accept a phone that doesn’t access the Internet. That would brand him a loser in his school. What you could do instead is to apply with the carrier, Verizon, AT&T or anyone else, to activate content filtering on your child’s phone. This only works for feature phones though and not for smart phones.

On smart phones, you’ll have to get a browser like the K9 browser that allows parental restrictions. And in case your child tries to install another browser, you have to turn that facility off in the Restrictions menu.

On both the Sony PlayStation 3 and the Wii, you can just switch the browser off altogether. You don’t have to worry about how that could cripple the machines in their gaming abilities.

The browsers are just incidental add-ons. If you don’t want to do that, on the PlayStation 3, you get to subscribe to Trend Micro’s parental blocking service that costs $20 a year.

Games systems and their controllers have become ever more complicated and for some people, difficult to use over time. Yet there is one system that aims to change all that, by making gaming a completely intuitive process once again.

The Kinect system is an add on to an already well established games system-the X-box 360. The system itself is a sensor that is plugged into the X-box, that is then placed where it will be able to ‘see’ the gamers.

A webcam forms the primary part of the sensor, and it is used to observe the movements of the people who are playing. There is no controller for the player to hold-instead they use their hands and bodies, using a series of gestures to interact with the game. Objects may also be used that are recognized by the system.

Another sensor is used to provide depth perception, telling the device how far away a user is, and allowing it to sense when a limb or body moves closer or further away from the device. Inbuilt microphones allow for voice recognition, so that the user can speak commands to the console. The combination of sensors provides recognition of faces, gestures, and the spoken command.

The microphones will also allow voice chat during games, without the need for a headset with microphone that can otherwise be somewhat cumbersome and restrictive. The sensor can track up to six people at any one time, but can only truly focus on two people for active game play. For each player, twenty joints in their body are observed in order to take data that is then translated into gaming commands.

Player movement is not a problem either. The sensor does not sit stationary in front of the games console, but has an inbuilt motor that turns it on a pivot. This gives the sensor a limited ability to track the players as they move during the game play.

The Kinect system can be bought as a stand alone unit that is then plugged into the game system that you already own. Or it can be bought together with a games package that will work with the device, or even as a complete bundle with the console, the sensor and the games package.

The sensor can be powered in either of two ways. The newer systems can take the sensor plugged into it directly, as they have a redesigned, powered outlet. Older systems though will be unable to provide sufficient power and so a separate power cable is provided for use with these systems. It must be plugged into the wall rather than the games console.

There is the potential in the future for home PCs to be able to use Kinect as well. This will be thanks to features that are due to be released in the Windows 9 operating system, whose release date is currently unknown.

In the meantime, gamers will have access to the controllerless system through the X-box 360, as Microsoft tries to reach out to people outside of the traditional gaming market.

I get asked all the time, “What video card should I buy?”, and I always have to answer, “What are you using your PC for?”.

Depending on whether your needs are for business, watching movies, or for extreme gaming can change the answer greatly.

For most of us common users, we are most interested in having great speed while watching our movies, and videos, with a card that can do a little gaming.

If you are a hardcore gamer, then you know you need to match your games to your video card. Often many games only support certain video chipsets.

So, if you have a favorite game, make sure you buy your video card based upon their recommended chipset.

For us home users who love to watch our TV, Videos, and Movies on our PC, we will want a card to do Hi-Def, and possibly Blu-Ray decoding.

My current favorite is ATI’s HD4670 chipset. These cards are fantastic for watching all kinds of movie formats, whether streaming, HD-DVD, or Blu-ray. You can find cards with the HD4670 from manufacturers like Diamond, Sapphire, and Asus.

If you are one of the hardcore gamers, I’m sure you’re well aware of the constant battle between Nvidia and ATI for being the speed champion.

I’ve always been happy with Nvidia for gaming. If you want to be on the cutting edge, be prepared to shell out $500 for a great gaming card from either Nvidia or ATI. For most games, you can get buy with slightly older chipsets, and keep your price down around $100.

The very first thing that would catch your attention when you are looking at Logitech G15 gaming keyboard is the big LCD display at the keyboard’s back.

There is a group of multimedia buttons just below the LCD to control your media player and sound volume. These are considered some of the standard selection of multimedia buttons.

The LCD itself displays info like calculator or as a thermometer. It will also turn itself into a LCD countdown timer like a stop watch or act as the display of an MP3 player.

The LCD POP3 shows the mailbox status, and the LCD Clocks shows clock, calendar or number of unread mails.

It can also be set to show CPU load and memory usage. Plugins can be installed to make the LCD function like a chat box.

If you don’t want to use the screen, you can just pull it down and it will fit into the keyboard nicely.

There is a button on the left that could disable the Windows-related buttons like the Windows buttons and the Context Menu button.

There are also 2 USB ports on the keyboard suitable for joysticks, mice, or a webcam.

There are 18 multimedia buttons on the left, numbered G1 to G18. The keys glow with a mild blue light once the keyboard is connected.

Most users think that the keyboard is nice to type with and only need minimal time to adjust to. The keyboard also processes correctly when you press several buttons at the same time.

The highlighting feature in the keyboard is a bit different compared to the others. Most of today’s highlighted keyboard uses see through material for their buttons.

But in Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard, the lights only highlight the alphabets on the keyboard. The symbols will be more visible in the dark.

The processor or the CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the brain and the most important chip in the computer. CPU is where all the calculations take place.

Choosing which processor is better for your computer depends on your computer needs. Today, Intel and AMD are the two companies on the market that produce processors.

There are options you can consider when choosing a right computer processor:

Do I need a single or dual processor?

The single processor has only one chip that processes all the calculations and instructions while the dual processor has two chips that work together to do all the tasks.

Some people buy dual processor thinking that it can make their computer faster. The dual processor is best suited for graphic design, digital photography and video editing.

Unless the application you are using requires much of the system resources, you may opt to buy a dual processor. But some applications can still run faster at a single processor.

What is the difference between Intel and AMD processors?

Currently, Intel took the leadership on both desktop and mobile processor market because it is basically more famous than AMD.

Macintosh previously used PowerPC chips designed by Motorola but they now come with Intel chips.

The AMD and Intel chips are so close in performance you would have to be a computer expert to tell them apart.

You can see the example comparison below:

Intel Pentium 4

Higher clock speed (average 2.4-3.4GHz)

4 gates

120 million instructions per second

33 stage pipeline

AMD AthlonXP/64 series

Lower clock speed (average 1.8-2.4GHz)

2 gates

345 (XP) to 375 (64) million instructions per second

16 stage pipeline

The comparison above means that Intel Pentium 4 runs at a higher clock speed than AMD but AMD can produce 345 to 375 million instructions per second (MIPS) than Intel.

When you purchase an AMD processor it is labeled as “Athlon64 2800+” which means it can about as fast as an Intel Pentium 4 2800MHz (2.8GHz) processor, however the AMD processor is only running 1.8GHz.

If you want a performance computer, then you can choose between Intel Pentium and AMD Athlon 64. Intel Pentium has higher clock speed, large cache and Hyper Threading Technology.

Users who choose Intel Pentium want a computer for video and photo editing. AMD Athlon 64 has lower clock speed than Intel, but also has large cache and Hyper Transport Technology.

Users who choose AMD Athlon 64 want a computer for gaming, movies and home entertainment.

What processor should I need for my laptop?

Most laptops use Intel processors. The main advantage is Intel SpeedStep Technology, which allows to reduce power consumption by reducing the clock frequency with minimal downtime or load.

If you want a laptop where you can play games and run multiple applications like P2P on the background, go for AMD laptop.

But if you want a laptop where you can crunch that raw data while your background scripts post data to an access database, go for Intel laptop.
