Blekko – What Will it Take to Take Away From Google’s Market Share?
In the earliest days of the internet there were two main contenders when it came to internet search engines. Google and Yahoo had the market, and though there were many smaller companies offering search engines, none of them had as many regular users as the big two did.
Over time the smaller companies began to die off. Others sometimes too their place, and the ones that were more successful were those based in particular niche markets. Unfortunately the smaller niches were soon overtaken by one of the big engines too, leaving ever less competition than before.
Eventually even Yahoo began to fade into obscurity, with Google taking the largest market share and Yahoo almost going bankrupt, before being bought out by another company.
Other companies have since come along and tried to rival Google. Many have failed, such as Cuil. This company seemed to have what it would take to make an impact-after all it was created by engineers who once worked for Google and who, you would think, would have the insider knowledge that would give them the edge.
They should have known what Google did right so that they could emulate it, whilst also having the fresh start that would let them avoid what Google did wrong. Read the rest of this entry →
