Remember how freeing it felt getting a 128 MB flash thumb drive about 10 years ago? Even up until a couple of years ago, getting a portable external hard drive that could hold 160 GB seemed like a great little personal luxury – you could carry your movies and your music and your data anywhere.

These days, even as these devices become extremely affordable, people do think twice before buying. They know that there’s cloud storage to be had for next to nothing at all.

If they buy their own personal hard drive, they figure, they could drop it or lose it or something. Cloud storage is forever. Why bother with a portable external hard drive, they feel.

The thing is, cloud storage isn’t as great as you might think. If you get a virus on your computer or if you any need to wipe your hard drive, it’s a lot easier to restore everything from a hard drive you have in your drawer than it is to download hundreds of gigabytes.

And anyway, who has the time or the patience to repeatedly stream a movie every time they want watch? In short, a portable external hard drive still makes sense.

Buying a drive, the choice today is between the USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. It would make a lot of sense to buy 3.0, because it doesn’t cost any more.

Of course, most computers don’t have a USB 3.0 port. But no matter, new computers that come out these days mostly have them.

Practically every computer should have 3.0 support withing a year or two. Until then, your superfast hard drive still can work with an old 2.0 port.

Stay away from FireWire though – that’s a standard that is nearly gone now. If you want something that’s even faster than USB 3.0, you should consider Intel’s Thunderbolt – something that’s only shown up on Apple computers so far.

Thunderbolt is pretty expensive. A mere cable for Thunderbolt costs $50. If you can find it. The upside though is that it can transfer data at twice the speed of USB 3.0.

Since Thunderbolt really hasn’t shown up anywhere yet, might not make much sense looking for a Thunderbolt hard drive. You might be able to use it with your newest Apple computers. You probably wouldn’t be able to use it on anyone else’s computer.

eSATA is a great option too, though that’s exclusively designed for hardware connections. Most new laptops feature eSATA these days. They’ll usually double up as a USB port too. If you get one of these hard drives, you’re in luck. They are as fast as USB 3.0.

Do consider springing for a network attached storage drive or a Wi-Fi drive. This is something that you don’t have to actually physically connect to your computer.

Basically, portable drives are dirt cheap. And they are super compact too. There’s quite nothing like owning a capacious 1TB hard drive that’s the size of the palm of your hand.

For most people, the large amount of storage space they get on today’s computers is enough for whatever they can pile onto it.

However, there are some people that need more space. Instead of buying yet another computer, you can buy external hard drives that can store what you need without adding too much to what you have in your home.

These can be downright small, and can even be portable when you do not want to lug your computer when going somewhere. If you need more space, this is the way to go.

Those that store a lot of music on their computers find that they soon run out of space. If you write your own music, you are going to need tons of extra space.

You can buy almost as must memory as you already have on your computer for around a hundred dollars, give or take.

This means that you can have double the space for far less than you would if you were to buy a more powerful computer or if you had to buy a second one just for your music needs. Music tracks take up a lot of space so give yourself a break and get what you need.

If you take a lot of photographs or have a photography business, external hard drives are going to be great for you too. You can put any projects you have finished on this and keep them there.

Once it is full you can store it safely and then get a new one to start filling it again. Most photographers keep large versions of their pictures and they have a lot of them. The extra space you find on the hard drive that hooks up to your computer externally is going to be a great way to file things away without overwhelming your desktop or your laptop.

Gamers also benefit from having external hard drives. You can keep a few games on your computer at a time, but you may find it hard to keep things moving. Your computer is going to slow down and your game play is going to be ruined as a result.

Instead of storing all of these games on your main hard drive, you can put your games on your external drive and then you can keep your computer fast. You can store many more games this way and you won’t have to delete something you love to make room for something new.

To find out more about external hard drives, have a look around online or go to your local computer and technology store to see what is out there. Some are connected to the computer simply and some are not so easy to use.

Some are more portable than others, and there are obviously differences in the amounts of memory each is going to offer.

You can easily find something that will fit your needs and that won’t cost you an arm and a leg to buy.

You already spent that must on your computer, now it is time to save a little cash.

Today’s computers are sleeker, smaller, and more portable than ever before. Some people use a smart phone for all of their computing needs, but those people don’t have a lot of use for many programs.

Everyone else either uses a hand held table, a laptop, a notepad, or a full sized PC or Mac at home. Whatever the case, each of these things has some type of hard drive, which is where all of your important information will be stored.

If you are smart, you will get something with a removable hard drive or you could end up losing more than just a machine.

If you have ever had a computer crash on you, you can start to understand why a removable hard drive might be a good idea.

Some of them are not, which means a fried computer will take your important files down with it, and unless you have backed that information up, you have lost it forever.

Everyone has the best of intentions when it comes to backing up computer files, but even the most ardent savers forget once in a while.

That is, of course, when the inevitable melt down is about to occur. If you can get the hard drive out of there, you can avoid this headache.

Short of throwing your computer off of a cliff and having the hard drive break into hundreds unidentifiable pieces, most hard drives can survive when a computer goes nuts.

A removable hard drive won’t help you much if you have a virus on your computer that cleaned it off, but it can help when a malfunction in the computer renders it useless.

A professional can always try to get your information off of your hard drive, but it can be very expensive and they may not be able to save anything.

On the other hand, if you have a removable hard drive, you can either put it into a new machine, or you can get an adapter that you put around the hard drive and it then allows you to plug it into another computer so that you can retrieve the files that you need to save. If something has corrupted the files, like the virus mentioned above, it won’t help much, but on the other hand, things have been saved with removable hard drives that were considered permanently lost in the past.

Remember that if you have a removable hard drive, you have to take care of it when it is not in your computer or device.

If you get a hard drive too close to a magnetic field of any type, you will probably find out that all of your information has been wiped clean.

You must do all that you can to keep it dry, clean, and safe from damage. Try to keep in in a safe spot, like your computer, if you can, and also see if you can find a case that may help you protect it from the every day accidents that can wipe out the files that you probably can not afford to lose.

Even a fairly easy project runs better using a little progress planning, though. You can make the set up go swiftly and smoothly by setting up your work area before hand. You’ll need one or more hard shots off the tee.

The drives should adapt to either satas specifications. SATA is an extremely common form of hard drive, so it need to be easy to discover and obtain one, often locally or online. A new screwdriver, if at all possible a Phillips #1, although from a pinch, a #2 will likely work. Your clean workshop. You will be working with quite a few small screws; don’t danger losing any advisors in any mish-mash of clutter.

Excellent lighting along with comfortable obtain make nearly every task visit more smoothly. If you happen to be like a lot of Mac Master owners, your Macintosh Pro might be under some sort of desk as well as table. The initial step is go the Apple Pro to some clean dining room table or desk within a well-lit region.
Discharge Static Energy

1. When the Mac Pro is working, shut the idea down in advance of proceeding.
2. Disconnect any kind of cables that happen to be connected to the Mac Pro, except the facility cord. The facility cord have to be connected, to aid you to discharge almost any static buildup from the power string and in its grounded electric outlet.
3. Discharge every static electricity that has built up on your system by touching the PCI extension slot protect plates. There are these sheet metal plates on the back from the Mac Pro, next to the DVI video clip connectors to the display. You will feel your slight static shock if you touch the actual metal include plates. That is normal; there’s for many who be concerned on your own or the actual Mac Expert.
4. Remove the facility cord from the Mac Pro.

to be continued…

Your computer is a machine with many different parts. There are the physical parts, such as the hard drive, the mouse and monitor, and there are the software items, including the operating system and the programs that run on it.

There are many different hard drives, and many different mice and other parts available in differing designs and from different manufacturers.

This gives the user a choice, both of the type of item they want and also the price that they are willing to pay for it. The problem is that they are not standard-each manufacture may make them differently.

These differences could be said to make the devices speak different languages to each other. A Microsoft mouse would speak a very different language to a Logitech mouse for instance.

How then, can the operating system speak to all of these different devices, in all of their various languages in order to make them work?

Obviously it would be inefficient to make a different operating system for each manufacturer, and if that were to happen it would still leave the problem of locking users into just one manufacturer for their entire hardware set. This is where device drivers come in.

Your computer has just one operating system on it, and that system is exactly the same as everyone else who is running it.

When you install a new device, you normally find that the device comes with its own driver disc, to be installed the make the device work.

The driver acts as a translator. It takes the instructions that the operating system sends it, and then tells the device what to do. All drivers are written in code, and at the one end will be standard so that they can listen to and understand what the operating system is saying.

Their output to the device however will be different depending on manufacturer. This simplified, layman’s look should make it clear that when a driver fails, the results are serious, normally resulting in a device not working.

Removing a driver is simple, but you should make sure that you have the new driver ready to replace it before doing so. Go into your ‘Start’ menu, and right click on ‘Computer’ before selecting ‘Properties’. Next you select ‘Device Manager’ and look to find the device that is not working.

Right click on the device, and select ‘Uninstall’. You will need to restart your computer.

When the computer starts it should find the device. If it does not, then it means that the device itself is at fault and not the driver.

Check the connections to the device, to make sure it is properly plugged in. If the device is found, proceed to the driver install, either through the windows prompt or else you can do it yourself.

Once the driver is installed, if the device still does not work then again, unfortunately the driver was not at fault and you will have to consider replacing the device.

If you’ve had something bad happen to your hard drive and find yourself looking for data recovery help, your probably in a hurry, not wanted to listen to hype or schemes.

Many individuals who have experienced the loss of their data cannot wait, and need to have their data now. Businesses on the other hand, need to have their data up and working so that they can continue to carry out their normal day to day operations.

Anytime you experience problems with your hard drive, you can count on data recovery to recover your data. There are a few options available, the first being recovery specialists that can actually come to you.

They will look at your computer and your hard drive, and first determine what caused the hard drive to malfunction. Data recovery specialists are highly skilled computer technicians, and know the hard drive inside and out.

Good specialists are those who can be there anytime you call. You don’t want someone who isn’t reliable, especially if you are looking to establish a relationship.

If the technician is able to be there immediately, he or she is showing that they are dependable. In the event of data loss or hard drive failure, you’ll want someone who doesn’t waste any time at all.

Another option available to you is software programs. These programs are great to use, although they must be used before you problem. You can’t use them after the disaster has happened, as there is nothing there to install it to.

If you install the program before hand and keep it installed, it can help you after the disaster. Most programs keep your previous data and information on file, so just in case something does happen to your hard drive, it will be available

In the event of a hard drive failure, virus, or natural disaster, there are options that you can use to recover your data. The most popular are data recovery technicians and data recovery software.

For businesses and corporations, technicians are the preferred way to go. Technicians can recover your files, even rebuild your hard drive if they need to. In the event of a hardware problem, the software won’t be able to do much for you.

Anytime you need help with data recovery, you should always look towards a specialist to help you. They can fix most problems, and more importantly – restore your precious data.

No matter where you live, there should be specialists close by who are always on call. Most charge very reasonable prices, and will come to you in the event of an emergency. When you compare specialists to software – the specialists are by far the best option for helping you with your data recovery.

Even though the hard drive stores data, it isn’t perfect by any means. Hard drive failure is very common with all computers, with no real way to prevent it.

Although there are several different reasons why a hard drive can fail, the most common is overheating. Viruses and crashes are common as well, along with theft and accidental deletion.

With the older style and mechanics of hard drives, the RPM speed was low, meaning that the drives wouldn’t overheat. The hard drives we use now days, have speeds between 7,200 and 10,000 RPM, meaning that they can get quite hot when they start working.

Computers of this day and age come with fans to cool everything down, with most hard drives including temperature sensors as well, so you can keep track of just how hot your hard drive becomes.

With hard drives today, overheating is a very common problem. The faster hard drives come with speeds of 10,000 RPM, which can make the temperature soar above 70 degrees F, really heating things up inside the drive.

The mechanics on the inside are built to withstand the heat, although if things become too hot, you’ll encounter problems.

If a drive becomes too hot and ends up losing the data, it may be next to impossible to retrieve the information – no matter how good your data recovery specialists may be.

One area that suffers from the drive overheating is the platters, which are magnetic media. Platters are what carry the data throughout the hard drive.

Platters are constructed from optical glass, aluminum, or ceramic and normally coated with a layer of magnetic material.

Once the hard drive begins to heat up, the platters will start to expand, which changes their size. When this happens, the magnetic surface on the platters will get destroyed, which results in a loss of data. If the physical area of the platters are damaged, it will result in unreadable sectors.

Other areas of the hard drive that can be damaged due to overheating are the read and write heads, head actuator, and the controller chip.

Hard drives are very sophisticated pieces of hardware, and can’t handle overheating. The read and write heads are a common example, as they can easily render the drive useless if they become damaged.

To prevent your hard drive from overheating, you should always make sure that it is cooled properly and well ventilated.

You can always get additional fans and coolers, which will improve both ventilation and the flow of air in your computer.

You can buy fans and coolers at very affordable prices, which makes them an ideal investment for keeping your hard drive or hard drives cool.

You can also get software that monitors the temperature of your hard drive as well. Whether it’s software, or additional fans, you should always ensure that your hard drives are kept cool.

By keeping them cool, you’ll greatly reduce the amount of crashes. You’ll also increase the stability of your hard drive as well, which will make your entire computer perform much better.

How many times have you experienced that sickening feeling when your hard drive suddenly fails?

How many times have you experienced that your hard disk just does not boot and all the data may be gone forever?

A hard drive failure is one of the most common problems and worst nightmares faced by computer operators all over the world.

Precious data is lost either at home or in big corporate environments. What can be done in these situations?

Well, there are certain solutions that can be performed by you in order to revive your hard drive. We will talk about the solution later. First, let us discuss why a hard drive fails.

Whether the data on the hard drive can be recovered or not depends on the extent of the problem. A hard drive can be damaged due to firmware corruption, electronic failure, mechanical failure or a logical failure.

Many times your hard drive may lose data due to the combination of the above mentioned factors. A hard drive may also develop bad sectors due to which the data on those sectors is lost or becomes unreadable.

Firmware refers to the information used by the computer to interact correctly with the hard drive. If the firmware fails or becomes corrupted, then important data on the hard drive is lost.

In case of an electronic failure there maybe occur an electrical surge that can knock out the controller board on the hard drive and make it unusable.

However data can be recovered by data recovery experts who use special data recovery software. Swapping the controller board with another one can prove to be dangerous as the information on the controller board is unique to the hard drive on which it is fitted.

In comparison to electronic failure a mechanical failure can turn out to be worst as data recovery can almost become impossible.

Mechanical failure includes head crash and also read/write head failure. Head crash can occur due to physical shock, power surges and movement of the computer.

Next come the logical errors. Logical errors have nothing to do with the hardware part. Logical errors can occur due to corruption of the file system on the hard drive or improper entries in the file allocation table.

In case of hard drive failure it is vital to call the data recovery experts. In most cases, the information on the hard drive is important and you cannot bear to lose it.

The experts enhance the possibilities of hard drive recovery in the case of failure of hard drive due to software malfunction, virus attacks and other reasons mentioned above.

Data can be recovered on any type of operating system including all versions of Windows as well as Apple Macintosh, Novell, Linux, Unix and also on all types of file systems like FAT, FAT32, NTFS, NTFS5, HFS, HFS+, NWFS, EXT2 and EXT3.

The experts may take the hard drive to their workshop in order to recover the lost data and then return it to you in a few days.

Most of the data recovery experts have their own laboratories that are involved in testing the hard drives and repairing them.

Loss of data is the last thing that you as the customer would ever want. This is where the data recovery experts come into the picture.

They cannot extract only data from hard drives, but recover data also from tape drives, cds, dvds and other important storage media.

You as the consumer can take up some preventive measures like backing up all your important data at least once a week.

Windows has its own feature rich backup program. There are other backup software programs available in the market that can avert a possible disaster.

Besides the concern of recovering your data, another problem is the time it may take for an expert to help. This can be a slow and tedious process.

I recommend having a second complete computer source such as a laptop (for portability) that you can continue your work. This way you are never completely down and you can share important data between the two.

I have recently purchased it and I am quite pleased with its performance.

For one thing, I like its size, its palm-sized and easy to take anywhere with you, and it is very stylish and durable too.

I would say it combines the best features of all hard drives. It comes along with the FireWire cable and a USB cable.

The USB cable can be used to obtain additional power as it is Y shaped. And due to the FireWire cable no external power supply is required.

The Verbatim offers quite a large space for storage, 320 GB is a huge space and you can easily use it to store your work information so that you don’t have to carry your laptop home.

However, there are a couple of things you will notice about it that might surprise you.

Firstly, the case looks like a metal case in the picture but when I bought it, it was actually a plastic silver case.

Secondly, the bottom of the drive heats up after one uses it for a few hours.

I would advise anyone using this drive that one should not use it for a long length of time. Otherwise it is perfect value for money.
