For many years people have enjoyed the convenience of being able to print documents at home, instead of having to go to a library or their work place.
But now the convenience of at home printing is set to take a step into the bizarre-as you will soon be able to print furniture and clothes, and other physical objects at home.
3D printing has been a reality for a while, but the massive costs involved previously made the technology unreachable.
For thirty years there have been printers that could make 3D objects instead of flat print, objects that are known as prototypes. Making prototypes, or early versions of a design object was their primary function.
Now a newer 3D printer, called the RepRap is changing things. At just a few hundred dollars, it is cheap, thanks in part to the fact that it’s design is open source, and hence is distributed for free.
The parts can be self made by a skilled person, though there are some electrical parts, such as the circuit boards that may have to be purchased. The RepRap is available in complete self assembly kits, and there are other kits that provide only the harder to make electronic parts.
Once you have built your printer, using the free design and documentation, you can then use it to make a second printer-making this a self replicating system.
