Has your PC started showing it’s age, and is feeling slow? Here’s a few things you can do to get some additional speed.

First let’s make sure how much memory you have. If you’re not sure, click on Start, then right click on My Computer, and choose properties.

On this information page you will see how much RAM you have in your PC. If you have less than 1GB of memory, the best thing you can do is upgrade your RAM. For Windows XP the sweet spot for memory starts at 1GB.

For Windows Vista, you’ll want to have 2GB or more. Adding memory to your PC is very easy, and will give you a great boost in speed.

You also want to check your hard drive fragmentation, to make sure your operating system, programs, and data files can be accessed as quickly as possible.

On a windows system, you can find your disk drefragmenter in your All Programs, under Accessories, and System Tools. You should run your disk drefragmenter every month or two.

If your PC is really feeling sluggish, it is very possible you have a malware infection. You can try running the Microsoft Malicious Removal Tool or Windows Defender as your first try to clean up you PC.

Malware, extra toolbars, and other little programs you may have added, can take a big bite out of your performance. Go through your Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel, and uninstall any programs you no longer use.

If you follow these few simple things, you will gain back some of the speed of your PC.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could simply open up your brain and add more space so you could remember everything? Oh well, you can’t do that but you can add more memory to your PC or laptop if the need arises.

When you buy a computer, it comes with a certain amount of memory already loaded on. This storage is where you can save files, applications, music, videos, pictures and anything else you’d like. It would be great to have unlimited memory but that is not always the case.

Maybe you have noticed that your computer is running slower than usual. You have used Disk Defragmenter to combine files and get rid of others that you don’t need. A computer that still runs slow may need a memory boost.

You can check the memory capacity on your hard drive. If you go to Start Menu, click on Computer. You’ll see a visual representation of your hard disk drives (C and D). The C drive is what you are looking at. It will show you how much of the total memory is still free, such as “231GB free of 285.”

When you need more memory, it’s not that hard to find. The quickest way is to check with your manufacturer. Most name brand computers have websites where you can find everything you need with a few clicks.

Let’s use Dell for example. On the bottom of a Dell laptop or on the Dell PC tower is your service tag number. With that number, you can access all of the information about the computer that they built for you. Now, you can find out which memory options you have for that model.

Memory comes in different configurations depending on the age of your computer. It doesn’t require an expert, but you will need to pay attention to the instructions carefully to get it right. For a laptop, the memory can be inserted in the underside of the device.

In either case, be sure that the device is turned off and everything is unplugged before beginning. Working on a kitchen table away from carpeted flooring is best to avoid problems with static electricity. Be sure that you are grounded to avoid shock.

Read all instructions before beginning. There are dedicated slots for memory expansion in both devices. Before you purchase a new computer, see if it is more feasible to add memory for better performance.

Used computers are still useful. They can help you save money and with that, you can spend your money wisely on other things.

If you are planning to buy a computer for personal use at home or for your kids, and want to consider buying a used computer, this article is for you.

You might want to consider the ten tips below on buying a used computer.

If you are not a tech-savvy, ask your tech-savvy friends to shop with you. They can help you choose the right specifications for your computing needs.

Search online computer stores that sell used or second hand computers. Make sure to search to at least 3 or 5 stores for price, specifications and warranty comparison. Read the reviews to help you give ideas in choosing and buying wisely.

If you are buying a used computer at a local computer store, make sure to give a thorough physical inspection on the used computer unit. This is to ensure that the computer is not damage and all functions are working. Insist on testing the computer yourself rather than watching the seller to do it for you.

Make sure that the used computer has the original operating system software discs, manuals and driver installer discs. Do not forget to get the discs, manuals or licenses for any software or applications installed on the used computer.

Bargain the price reasonably with the seller. It doesn’t matter how much the seller paid for the computer. Remember that computers depreciate fast so don’t overpay.

Do not buy used printers, scanners or hard disks unless you are sure that they are actually still working. These peripherals have parts that may easily break down or get damaged.

Make sure that the used computer is upgradable like there are expansion slots, extra RAM can be added, or the processor can be upgraded.

Ask if the computer parts have been replaced or repaired. Major computer components that have been replaced add to the machine’s life longevity.

Make sure that the computer’s operating system is compatible with the application or software you have or need to add now or in the future.

Ask if the seller has a transferable warranty or service agreement of the used computer. That would give you peace of mind that the used computer still has warranty that you can avail of.

Computer memory is a very essential part of a computer system. It is commonly referred to as RAM (Random Access Memory).

When a user opens an application or program and any files opened on that application, they are loaded into the RAM.

But once these files are saved and closed, the files are written into the specified storage device. The files and the application are then purged from the RAM.

RAM is the temporary or volatile storage area utilized by the CPU (Central Processing Unit). With RAM, you can both read and write data.

SIMM and DIMM are the two commonly types of computer memory.

Single In-line memory module (SIMM) is dedicated to store memory chips while Dual In-line Memory Module (DIMM) is used to hold memory chips.

DIMM has a 64-bit upgrade path because of the Pentium processor requirements. With this, DIMMs can be installed one at a time unlike SIMM.

DIMM provides twice as much data as a single SIMM. Command address and control signals are buffered on the DIMM.

To determine the type of memory that fits your computer is to verify first the requirements of your computer system’s motherboard.

If your motherboard supports DDR 400/333/366, then you can choose the memory speed and capacity you prefer.

1 Gigabyte is the recommended computer memory capacity. It would be excellent if you can install 2GB or greater.

Higher memory capacity can help increase the speed in loading and opening the computer and applications installed.

Just because there is a supercomputer displayed on a computer showroom doesn’t mean you have to buy it.

A computer can last longer but since technology advances quickly and software requires new technology that after four or five years, your new computer is considered outdated.

So what should you? Upgrade? Replace? Sell it? It is not funny if you will still keep your old computer. You can still use it for testing purposes, word-processing and internet surfing.

If you are deciding whether to upgrade or replace your computer, think again. There are things that you still need to consider with this kind of decision especially if you have a tight budget for a new computer.

When to upgrade or buy a new computer?

If you decide to upgrade most of the components of your computer because they are outdated and old already, that means that the upgrade price will be almost similar to buying a new computer.

With that, you should just buy a new computer, instead of upgrading most of the components.

Most of the applications today require faster systems. They require faster processor, memory, great graphic cards and bigger hard disk space.

You can meet these applications’ requirements by upgrading some of your computer’s components but you have to live up with the compromises. This can mean that you may still experience computer performances issues.

But there is still advantage when you just upgrade some of your computer components. If your computer is just one year old, you can just upgrade the memory or graphics card to further improve performance. With that, you can save money.

Which hardware components to upgrade first?

Memory

Upgrading your computer’s RAM (Random Access Memory) can solve any computer-performance related issues you are encountering.

If your computer is properly configured, it will just be easy to install a new memory module. You can upgrade to a 1 GB RAM or 2 GB, depending on the capacity of your system.

Make sure that the new RAM’s speed is similar to the old RAM installed on the computer. For example, your old RAM is DDR2-800.

You should also install a new DDR2-800 RAM. Why? Because if you install a new DDR2-667 RAM, the system will read the lower value, which is 667. With that, you will not be able to use the 800 speed.

Hard drive

If you love downloading and storing softwares, pictures and videos, you will need to have an extra hard disk space.

Storing these kinds of files in the system drive of your computer can be a slow-performance factor. Either, you move the operating system page file to another drive or store your files on other drives.

Having an extra hard disk space can also be used for data back-up. This will help you retrieve files in case of a computer crash.

CDROM or DVDROM drive

Does your computer have a CD-RW or DVD-RW drive? If not, you can consider buying it so you can make your own CDs. You can burn important data or movies. You can also make personalized CDs that you can sell to your friends for extra income.

Graphics Card or Video Card

Are you an addict gamer or a graphics designer? Upgrading your computer’s graphic card will enable your computer improve its resolution and speed deliverance. You can also play more new games that require good resolutions.

Monitor

Upgrading your monitor is optional. If you are craving for that 21” widescreen LCD monitor, why not buy it? LCD monitors consume less power than CRT monitors.

Processor or Motherboard

If you are thinking to upgrade other computer’s hardware components like processor and motherboard, you should also have considerations.

Make sure that if you will upgrade the processor, it is compatible with your motherboard and vice versa. Otherwise, your system will not work very well.

Usually, upgrading your motherboard requires you to upgrade the processor, memory, and graphics card as well.

Be sure to take down notes what you really need and take into considerations the things that you want to upgrade.

Maybe you are also asking, “Do I have to upgrade the operating system?” It is better to upgrade the operating system if you have a new computer.

Usually, the latest operating system is bundled with a new computer package. New operating systems like Windows Vista require new hardware components that your old computer may not have.

Eventually, you may encounter some software that requires new operating systems but it doesn’t really happen until the operating system you are using is two or three years old.

This is because software vendors and developers don’t want to lose you as a customer, and will not create a specific version of their software until everyone has upgraded to the latest operating system.

Good luck to upgrade your computer. Be wise to spend your money.
