If you are perennially a price-conscious shopper, shopping for laptops has to be a unique experience. No other part of the electronics shopping experience ever encounters the kind of roller coaster of temporary discounts and sales that shopping for cheap laptops does.

The most important part to finding cheap laptops is this – you really need to know your stuff. It can be easy to take a quick look at the specs on the machine and think you’re getting great value.

If you don’t really pay attention to everything, you could be missing a hidden unimpressive spec.

Well, here are a few tips on how to understand the market for cheap laptops. Go in armed with these tips, you should find yourself a lot better equipped to tell the good deals from the bad.

As you might expect, retailers put various brands and models of laptop on sale in the discount area because usually, they’re trying to clear out space for more recent inventory.

Sometimes, they just have to do that because they have B-stock – that’s the term they use for floor display models that they would like to get rid of or units returned by the customer for some minor reason.

All of these are sold as refurbished products. And of course, they couldn’t sell this kind of thing at full retail.

So that’s an interesting term you usually come across when you’re hunting for cheap laptops – refurbished.

What exactly is a refurbished computer?

Well, as you just read in the last paragraph, these are usually units that are either returned by a customer for no real reason or ones that have been sitting on the shelves as display models.

They typically go over these computers carefully to see that there’s nothing wrong with them, wipe the hard drive and reinstall all software, and they sell it.

There’s really nothing much to it. They just have to slap the “Refurbished” label on it because they have to by law if it isn’t completely new.

One thing you need to do before you go out shopping, you need to do your research. To make sure that you remember the specifications at the store, keep those specs written down on paper.

You don’t have to worry about how cheap laptops are somehow less durable or anything. They use the same quality standards more or less.

At their best, cheap laptops are merely marked down for no good reason – the manufacturer decided to overhaul the look of their laptops or something.

And do remember – if you are buying refurbished, make sure that you check to see that you’re offered the full guarantee.

If your professional life depends on having your computer behave properly (and that would kind of described the work one out of two people do), you really need to keep a bagful of tricks handy for every time your computer acts up – system files that get corrupted, important data that somehow gets deleted, user accounts that don’t somehow log you on.

You’re telling yourself that this is why those computer magazines keep exhorting you to keep backing up all the time. And certainly, that wouldn’t be a bad idea – scurrying for a backup drive backup disk whenever something goes wrong.

The thing is, reloading everything from a backup really is overkill. And pressing System Restore doesn’t turn back the clock on user files. What you need is to learn how to fix computer problems like these without turning your computer inside-out.

Let’s start with a simple problem that just seems to occur to computers for no reason – system files that just get corrupted.

When this happens, your computer won’t even start up. All you get is a blank screen with an unfriendly-looking line about how some .dll is corrupted and do you have a Windows disc.

How do you just do a bit of precision repair work, and fix just the problem you have and get on with your life? What you need for this is to keep a Windows installation disc handy.

When Windows claims that a system file has become corrupted, the first thing you need to do is to try to see if your PC will boot into Safe Mode.

You get into safe mode by pressing the power button on your computer and then pressing F8 when it’s booting up. If this does work, you just find your way to System Properties and access System Restore.

If your PC is far too corrupted for even Safe Mode to work, it’s back to the old Windows install disc for you. Pop the disc in, restart your computer, boot to the CD and then use the System Restore utility that you’re offered. It’ll tell you how to fix computer problems to do with corrupted system files.

How about when the problem is not with a Windows system file but with one of your own personal files?

What if one of those gets deleted by accident?

You could certainly run to your backup hard drive for this; but what if the backup isn’t up to speed with a file that you really need?

In cases like these, you could seek the help of a rescue program like Recuva or Recover my Files. These programs look through your hard drive for anything that’s been recently deleted and restore them in pristine condition. These are neat programs that show you how to fix computer problems to do with file disappearances.

And finally, what do you do if you’ve been locked out of your own Windows user account – through your own doing or someone who’s been careless?

Well, there’s pretty much nothing you can do unless you have acted preemptively and created a password reset disc. If you haven’t done this already, you really should – you just go to User Accounts and Family Safety in the Control Panel and get it done.

With the rise of online for free downloading, anyone from all over the world can gain quick access of their most desired movies and music videos, digital photos, documents or any file belonging from others.

As it turns out, nearly anything we do on the internet includes downloading. For example, when accessing a website page, we are actually transporting the text documents, graphics, and everything that’s associated with it.

As the data reaches our web browser, it scans its file extension and if it’s familiar with the type of file, then it will show its contents. Once it’s done, we have the option to save it to our hard drive.

Things to do before downloading

Downloading is fairly quick and easy, depending on the size of the file. With a few clicks of the mouse, an internet connection and a running computer, it will allow us to get the specific files we want to download and save them to our computer.

Although, files can be placed anywhere on the hard drive and in any folder, it is still advisable to create a new directory or folder on the hard drive for provisional downloaded files.

It would be safer to create this folder under the C drive and with a folder name, downloads to locate the newly acquired files without difficulty.

How to download

Once the folder for the downloads is created, transferring the files to a computer is just a few mouse clicks away. Most web browsers have generally the same steps to follow when it comes to downloading.

Once the file to be downloaded is located, clicking on the hyperlink with the right button of the mouse allows the user to do specific tasks.

In this case, the phrase, save Target As or any phrase that has the same meaning to it should be chosen. The browser then automatically prompts the user which folder should be used to save it.

The folder with the name, downloads, shall specifically be the container to all the downloaded files. To view the file, the user shall go directly to the folder with the name downloads.

Downloading is that simple. However, the computer must be equipped with at least an anti-spyware program in case a spyware comes along with the downloaded file.

Extra precautions should be taken to minimize the risk of getting a spyware into the computer. Nevertheless, getting a file we want is worth the effort. Downloading is perhaps one of the most beneficial functions in the world of computers.

Computer maintenance is one way to keep your laptop or PC working like new five years from now. Many people don’t think about maintenance until something catastrophic happens, but you have the good fortune to be thinking about it now. One part of the maintenance process is keeping your computer running at tiptop speed.

There are many reasons that computers begin to run slow: viruses, not enough memory, too many applications (goes along with insufficient memory) or a lot of files. Whatever the reason, something needs to be done so you don’t have to work at a snail’s pace.

Behind the scenes on your computer, many things are going on. If you get on the Internet, your computer may be allowing “cookie” files to be stored to remember where you’ve been. We download any and everything from music to videos to eBooks from the Internet. There are temporary files created for some of your downloaded items that can accumulate over time.

Sometimes, the hard drive just needs to be cleaned up a bit. With the defrag process, the computer finds ways to free up space on your hard drive. This cleaning process ensures optimal performance from your computer when something else is not the problem. Defragmenting your computer is a good first step when performance is not at its best.

If you are having a hard time navigating the various files on your computer, the proper name of the process used to correct this is “Disk Defragmenter.” You can use your program search bar on the Start Menu to find it easily. The defragmenter takes fragmented files and consolidates them or gets rid of them completely depending on what they are and if they’re needed.

This is not something that you need to do every day. Remember, you are maintaining here. Performing the operation once a week is good for those who use their computer every day and create a lot of documents and files. The best thing about Windows is that these maintenance operations can be set up on a schedule so that they work behind the scenes like Santa at Christmas. Schedule maintenance operations at odd times like early in the morning or in the middle of the night, when you are not at work on your computer in order to keep them from slowing down your PC while you’re trying to work.

In a nutshell, disk defragmentation is important for everyone. Scheduling the operation leaves your brain free to think about other things. If the defragmentation process does its job, your computer will continue working well for you without any hitches or glitches.

Anytime your hard drive crashes or you lose your data, you’ll need to turn to data recovery to properly restore your information. Data recovery is something most computer users are familiar with, as a majority of us have had to turn to data recovery at some point in time. Even though hard drives are becoming better and better, they are still mechanical and will always encounter problems.

The first thing to do, before any problems happen, is to always back up your data. If you create backups of your information, you’ll be well prepared in the event of a disaster. This way, even if your hard drive cannot be repaired and the data is lost forever, you’ll have the back ups to continue going as normal. If you didn’t make back ups, you’ll find the situation very traumatic when you discover that your data cannot be recovered.

Most hard drives will last for years before they start to encounter any type of malfunction or hardware problems. You can help prevent data loss by turning off your computer when it isn’t in use, or shutting it down when you hear the hard drive making an odd noise. If the hard drive starts to malfunction, letting it continue to run will only do more damage. If you shut it off immediately and take it to a specialist, you’ll have a much better chance of getting it repaired.

With natural disasters, hackers, viruses, or other problems, you won’t have the time to react. Before you know it, your hard drive will be damaged and your data will be gone. Although this can be very frustrating, data recovery can normally bring your information back. All you need to do is take the hard drive to a local specialist, then let them work their magic and show you the power of data recovery.

There are software programs out there that claim to recover lost data, although you should avoid them at all costs. Most of time, these software programs will do your hard drive more bad than good. Even though software may cost a lot less than professional data recovery services, the professional services will guarantee their work. If you turn to software and it only makes things worse – your more or less out of luck, as the software doesn’t guarantee anything.

Anytime your hard drive fails and you seem to have lost your data, you should turn to professional data recovery services immediately. They may cost you a lot of money, although they do the job right the first time. When it comes to your data, you really don’t want to take any chances – especially if you had important documents and files stored on your hard drive.

Are you tired of shelling out money again and again for software applications? I bet many people are, since software can be expensive. So, never doubt the idea that the Internet has it all, because it does. The Internet even has free software programs you can download.

However, the real problem is looking for them. Here are some tips to get the free software you need.

Think open-source

Many computer experts and techie communities are developing open source programs for the benefit of all without spending a single dime on them. Open-source programs were made as a response to the sky-rocketing prices of most software programs.

Some examples of these open-source programs are Mozilla Firefox for internet browsing, Open Office for office applications, Foxit for pdf file reading, and Pidgin for instant messaging. These are just some open-source software programs, but you’ll be surprised at what you can find when you search for them (on Google, for example; or from your techie friends).

Dig in software download search engines

A simple search on your trusty search engine for the keywords free software download will yield a lot of download search engines or websites dedicated to these free software programs. Most of them are download search engines which direct you to the specific software you need from that website itself. It also has categories on what purpose you need the program for, which greatly helps narrowing down the search.

Most of the licensed software programs are available in trial versions on most of these download search engines. Although there are still a lot of available software programs which have the full version.

Utilizing torrents

If everything else fails and you need something you can’t find using the tips listed above, torrents is the last resort, because torrents are the most diverse and powerful file sharing built. If you have your own connection at home with a good broadband connection, this is absolutely for you.

Torrents are used for file-sharing using torrent programs to download the file being shared. Basically anything and EVERYTHING can be found in torrents. Where can you find these torrents? Searching for torrents in your search engine will direct you to the most popular torrent search engines, which will help you find the software programs you’re looking for.

The verdict?

Looking for free software programs using the Internet is no sweat at all. With the right keywords and the right knowledge on where to get them, you’ll be getting that software you need without paying a dime.

We’ve all heard of computer viruses. Even people who are neophytes to computers have heard tales of computer viruses spreading like wildfire through a network and wreaking havoc.

Unfortunately those tales, while mildly exxagerated, are fairly accurate portrayals of how potentially damaging viruses can be.

Aside from regular computer viruses, however, another irritating and potentially destructive type of computer program that can infect your pc through the internet is spyware, and its little cousin, adware.

Adware by itself is generally harmless, albeit irritating. It is a program that basically inserts itself into your system and spams you with tons of unasked for and unsolicited advertising.

Spyware is a much more threatening program. Some types of spyware seem like simple adware on the surface, but aside from flooding you with ads, spyware, as its name suggests, also allows its controller to monitor and access information you have on your computer. Other types of spyware also change your pc’s system configuration, leaving you open to further intrusions.

There are several methods available that can help you avoid the hazards of getting invaded by spyware. Among the most effective of these are:

Adjust your computer’s security settings – the procedure for adjusting your security settings differs depending on your operating system. By and large, it can be found by looking for the option for controlling system settings or internet options. Look for the heading that refers to system security, and adjust it according to your personal tastes. For home users, setting security levels to Medium is recommended, as High security settings will actually block out some sites you may want to access.

Firewalls – these are security programs that automatically block unidentified programs that try to remotely access your terminal. You can set the parameters of the firewall so that only certain types of programs get filtered, or even limit your accessability so that only specified sources can send you data. The only disadvantage to a firewall is that sometimes it will tend to block information you try to recieve from even harmless sources if they are not specified on your firewall settings.

Anti Spyware Programs – online programs can be downloaded that are actually geared towards spyware security. When looking for such a program, find one that not only detects and intercepts spyware attempts on your system, but one that also has options to actively scan your system periodically for existing spyware that may have already gotten in. Find a provider for your anti spyware program that keeps itself updated with the latest spyware technology so that you can download patches for the program that can deal with the latest types of spyware that hackers are using.

Violence, sex, nudity, and explicit language, pornography, online gambling, online predators, viruses, spyware, and adware; these are some of the threats that your kids can encounter while using the internet.

And since you can’t monitor them all the time, you need to find ways to protect your kids from these threats. Here are some of those ways:

1. Teach them to stay secure. Talk to them about personal security while using the internet. Tell them to refuse giving any personal information to people they meet online. Avoid filling out membership and survey forms that would entail them to state their personal information.

2. Place your computer in a place where you can monitor your kids’ use of the internet and not in their bedroom.

3. Set up house rules to limit your kids’ internet access.

4. Keep your kids’ computer account “limited. This will keep you in control over the significant access to the computer.

5. Discourage them from making personal profiles using online networking websites that can be viewed by anyone. Sites like MySpace create venues for online predators to access different personal information for their predatory purposes. If your kids already have profiles posted on the web, make sure that you know what pictures and personal information they post. Also, view their personal blogs.

6. If your kids are young enough to use the regular web browser, download web-browsers that are made for kids. They filter bad websites and limit your kids’ access to pre-approved webpages.

7. Tell them to avoid peer-to-peer file-sharing softwares. This is because viruses, spyware, and adware can freely enter your computer through these softwares.

8. Use internet filtering software to block bad websites from your computer.

9. Use internet monitoring software to secretly track the activity of your kids from websites visited, chat rooms entered, downloads, conversation, and IMs.

10. Attend to your kids immediately if they report any uncomfortable online exchanges they have encountered.

11. Share a common email address so that you can monitor their messages.

12. If they use instant messaging, make sure that you know who are on their list.

13. If they enter chat rooms, tell them to stay in the public room so that the chat room administrator can monitor your conversation. Tell them to ignore private messages.

14. Tell them not to meet personally with strangers they only met online.

15. And, teach them to approach you whenever they have any doubts on the emails and messages they receive, window popups that appears, and forms they were asked to fill-out.

Most of us who use computers maximally get frustrated when our computers have slowed down. Naturally, we look for someone to help us so we can increase the speed of our computers.

This can sometimes be a further waste of time as we try to look for someone when actually, we can do the jobs ourselves. Here’s how:

1.	Get rid of those unnecessary wallpapers. Simply go for the basic built-in designs to improve the speed a great deal. If you can’t help it, don’t stretch the wallpaper because dragging can slow down the functions. Also, remove animations that aren’t needed by your programs.

2.	If you have drivers installed on your computer, make sure you do frequent updates because updating can improve the speed of your programs.

3.	Sometimes we can’t help but open several programs at the same time because we need to do multi-tasking. If we have to do this, we need to minimize those programs we aren’t currently using.

4.	Remove the message that says you are starting Windows 95/98 because this can slow down booting. To remove this, just go to c:\ and look for the file Msdos.sys. Then remove the Read-only option. Open this in Notepad then go to options and change by adding BootDelay=0.

5.	To restart Windows, simply hold down the Shift key to restart Windows instead of restarting the whole system which can take longer.

6.	You may also try working on a lower resolution so that you can move faster with your PC.

7.	Regularly defragment your computer so that files can be consolidated into single files. This will surely speed up the functions of your computer.

8.	For faster ejection of CDs, simply right-click on the CD drive letter in My Computer and choose Eject. Icons will be removed as well which could somehow slow down the process.

9.	Get rid of fonts that you don’t usually use. Just go to fonts under c:\windows and remove those fonts that you no longer need.

10.	Get rid of unnecessary files by constantly emptying your Recycle Bin and removing temporary Internet files. These take up space and of course, needs to be read by your CPU every time you boot. Even your email inbox should be regularly cleaned up to enhance the speed of your usage.

Now that you know it isn’t hard to speed up your very own computer, simply follow the said steps and you are on your way to having a reliable and faster computer.
